Surprise! The University of Manchester’s first musical of the year is… Bonnie & Clyde! Here is a brief summary of the plot & history of this musical.

[Image description: a series of four slides, each photo has a tan background with the title ‘Bonnie & Clyde’]

Image 1: This includes three historical photos of the couple. On the far left is Bonnie Parker with a cigar in her mouth and a pistol in her hand. The middle photo shows the couple embracing in a tight hug and kiss, and the final photo shows Clyde Barrow seated on the bumper of a black car with a gun in his hand. The text reads ‘Book by Ivan Mitchell, Lyrics by Don Black, and Music by Frank Wildhorn’ and ‘Plot Summary & Information.’

Image 2: This image includes the caption ‘Photography by The Other Richard’ and ‘Production images feature West End Cast.’ The photo shows four different images from the production of Bonnie & Clyde on the West End. The first one shows two men holding hands and leaning backgrounds with a prison background behind them. The second photo shows the whole cast smiling up at the stage lights with one arm in the air each. The third photo shows a woman seated on a couch with her legs on the armrest, she is looking off to the left with a fake pistol in her hand, ‘aiming’ it. The final photo shows a couple embracing and smiling towards the right side of the camera.

Image 3: This image includes the caption ‘let’s raise some hell’ in addition to the title. The text reads: ‘Bonnie & Clyde is based off the famous couple Bonnie Parker & Clyde Barrow who operated as joint bank robbers from 1932-1934, throughout the American west. The couple's crime spree has inspired multiple movies, musicals, stories, and novels. They were responsible for dozens of robberies, murders, and kidnappings throughout The Great Depression. This musical follows their love affair and focuses on the class divide present in America at the time. A romantic, daring, and dark American musical for the ages.
It was originally performed in San Diego, California in 2009, before debuting on Broadway at the end of 2011.”

Image 4: The text reads: ‘This musical includes the use of inappropriate language, depictions of drug and alcohol abuse, portrayals of sexual content, the use of guns, and mentions of violence. Bonnie & Clyde has recurring themes of poverty and focuses on the economic class divide in the US during the 1930s. This musical does portray violence in various ways and the committee wants to stress the importance of accurate portrayals of both the harmful history and the musical itself.’
