As we get closer to our Baptist History and Principles weekend, we thought we'd talk about one example of Baptist Activism: the story of Sam Sharpe and the Baptist Rebellion of 1831.

If you're interested in learning more, why not join us on 11-12 July for our weekend exploring Baptist History at https://buytickets.at/lutherkingtheologicalcollege/2098766

We recently held our Safer Sacred Spaces training weekend at Luther King ๐ŸŒฑ

Our staff and students reflected on how they and their church communities can create safer and healthier spaced before. They covered boundaries, reflective practice, self-awareness and wellbeing throughout what was a delightfully meditative weekend.

We thought we'd share some photos of the group, along with our EM1 and AALP students!

We are both excited and inevitably a little sad to share the news that this summer Noel Irwin will be moving on from Luther King after being called to serve as Minister in the Oldham and Tameside Missional Partnership of the United Reformed Church.

Of course we will be sad to lose Noel after 13 years of being so deeply committed first to Hartley Victoria College, then Northern College, and our wider Luther King community, and of course especially to the training of Church-related and other Community Workers.

Noel writes:
"I want to complete the circle and finish my ministry in doing what I was originally called to do which is to work with local churches and I'm genuinely excited to do that."

We wish Noel and his family every blessing in his new ministry.

We will be continuing to deliver all the Community Development programmes and modules Noel has worked so hard to establish and resource at Luther King Theological College, and everyone will continue to be fully supported both in the studies and their placement and formational journeys.

Thank you, Noel!

Over a decade ago, Dr Liz Shercliff (a member of our academic team) established a conference for women. Back then, it happened once a year. May this year saw the first of four conferences in 2026. It took place at St Pancras church in London, with almost 100 participants. Once again, as last year, we were welcomed by the Bishop of London - and acting Bishop this time, since the previous one has gone on to be Archbishop of Canterbury. As well as Liz speaking, Selina Stone, Karen O'Donnell and Lucy Winkett also addressed the conference.

A similar event will take place here at Luther King Theological College on Saturday 24th October 2026, where our speakers will be Mary Kells, Grace, Thomas, Gill Shaw, Kate Bruce, and Liz, so please save the date!

Congratulations to our very own Revd Dr Graham Adams on becoming President Elect for the Congregational Federation! ๐ŸŽ‰

Every year, the churches of the Congregational Federation elect a President โ€“ a voluntary role which involves representing the CF at various events, participating in the council meetings, and engaging with the churches, to encourage and challenge on a chosen theme. Revd Dr Graham Adams, tutor at Luther King, has been elected as President Elect and will be President from May 2027-28!

We are thrilled to see a member of our team doing such brilliant things for the wider community, and couldn't be prouder โœจ

It is Mental Health Awareness Week ๐Ÿง

The Mental Health Foundation have chosen "Action" as the theme for this year's Mental Health Awareness week. While awareness is vital, real change comes when we take action too. We all have a role to play in creating mentally healthy communities, and doing something for others is good for our own mental health, too!

We thought it would be a good opportunity to highlight the ways that Luther King can support your mental health and overall wellbeing. Our students have a wide range of personal and financial support available to them, and we strive to ensure nobody faces hardship alone. But what about everyday actions?

Visiting Luther King House gives you access to a peaceful quad, where many people like to take a moment out of their day to sit and reflect. In the quad, you will find staff, students, hotel guests and conference visitors all enjoying the space in their own way. Fresh air, peace, and human company is vital for mental wellbeing.

We are also situated across the road from the beautiful Platt Fields Park, where you can go for a walk, jog, or sit and birdwatch. We are lucky to be so close to nature in the city, and hope that anybody in our community makes the most of this space.

One of the most brilliant ways to stimulate the mind, create good habits and develop your mental wellbeing is to read. So why not join our library? Members have access to nearly 40,000 books, as well as a calm space to work and relax.

Do you have any suggestions as to how people can take action for their mental health? Let us know in the comments ๐Ÿ’ฌโฌ‡๏ธ
