We are delighted to announce a one-day conference to be held on Wednesday 15th April, 2026 at the Society of Antiquaries to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Marlborough Mound Trust.

This conference looks at the very different ways in which the Mound is special, and describes the work carried out over the past twenty-five years, which has secured the site for the future. The restoration has now been completed to a point where conservation is now the main task, but the planned removal of two disused storage sheds has brought the opportunity for further archaeological work with access to the interior of the Mound, since these buildings had been cut into it.

The OMGS Mixed Meeting at West Sussex GC, Pulborough, will be held on Sunday, 31 May 2026. West Sussex has kindly allowed us to move the date a little earlier, to avoid Father’s Day and to be during school half-term. The meeting is always an enjoyable, relaxed event: lunch followed by 18 holes of foursomes. Only one member of the pair needs to have been at Marlborough.

Following a successful experiment last year, we invite any pairing with a family relationship, as long as one player is an OM. So, pairings of sister and sister, mother and daughter, brother and brother, father and son, father and son-in-law, grandson, nephew or godson etc will also be allowed. It is also very acceptable if both partners are OMs.

As this is a Meeting of the society, all participants who are members of the OMGS will receive subsidies for the cost of green fees and lunch:

Players aged 36 and over will receive a subsidy of £30 and

Players aged 26 to 35 receive a subsidy of £40

Players aged 25 and under a subsidy of £75.

Please register on the OMGS website if you would like to play. https://omgs.wildapricot.org/

Please note that the subsidies are only available to OMGS. If you are not a member and would like to play, please email [email protected] and we will pass your details on to the Match Manager.

A fantastic atmosphere at the Principality Stadium on Sunday! Sophie Gow (MM 2014–19) and Hector Mackellar (C1 2014–19) there to support Archie Griffin (C3 2014–19). An entertaining game — even if the result didn’t go Wales’s way

On September 21st, Hector Mackellar (C1 2014–19) will be taking on IRONMAN Wales — a gruelling test of endurance comprising a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike ride, and a 42.2km marathon, with over 3,000 metres of elevation gain — all in a single day.

Hector is competing in support of Helen & Douglas House, a charity that provides specialist hospice care for children with life-limiting and terminal conditions, along with vital support for their families.

To prepare for IRONMAN Wales, over the past nine months, Hector has:
👟 Run just over 600 km — the equivalent of running from his office in Moorgate to Edinburgh Castle.
🚲 Cycled 4,550 km — more than riding from Land’s End to John o’Groats three times, while also climbing the equivalent elevation of summiting Everest nearly four times.
🏊🏼 Swum just over 100 km — the same as swimming from Dover to Calais three times.

Alec de Candole (C3 1911-16) came to Marlborough as a Foundation Scholar and soon distinguished himself both academically and in the life of the College. A gifted classicist with a deep sense of vocation, he won an Open Exhibition to Trinity College, Cambridge, and had intended to enter the Church.

The First World War altered those plans. Commissioned into the Wiltshire Regiment in 1916, Alec later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. He was killed in action near Arras on 3 September 1918, aged only 21, just weeks before the Armistice.

Despite his brief life, Alec left behind a body of poetry of striking sensitivity. His posthumously published Poems (1920) reveal both his religious convictions and his reflections on war, friendship, and mortality. They stand alongside his essays in The Faith of a Subaltern as a testament to a thoughtful young man whose gifts were cut short by conflict.

He is remembered at Marlborough not only as a scholar and a poet, but also as one of the many Old Marlburians who gave their lives in service during the Great War.

Honor Koe (MO 2012-17) has written, produced, and is starring in her play "Are We doing This Right?", coming to the stage in September 2025. Over countless pints and a few questionable dinners, two friends stumble through the unpredictable landscape of their twenties—where dreams collide with reality, and the challenges of growing up hit harder than expected.

Following a sold-out run at a pub theatre in May, the play has now been reprogrammed for a week at the renowned Riverside Studios in Hammersmith from 3rd - 7th September. Get your tickets here: https://riversidestudios.co.uk/see-and-do/are-we-doing-this-right-192113/

100 Objects: Sculpture

We are delighted to share a new instalment of ‘Marlborough in a Hundred Objects’ looking at the College’s sculptural works.

The five distinctive sculptural pieces reviewed here reflect the College’s rich artistic and historical heritage. They include a carved altar cross by Old Marlburian Alan Durst (C1 1896-99), a pioneer of direct carving; the grand Victorian reredos in the Chapel, designed by Bodley and Garner and richly adorned with angels and painted by Sir Ninian Comper; and the bust of revered schoolmaster William Edward Mullins, likely sculpted by fellow alumnus Edwin Roscoe Mullins. A rare Epstein bust of Winston Churchill, once displayed in the Garnett Room, exemplifies the school’s ties to national history and notable sculptors. Perhaps most remarkable is the Egyptian mummy in the Language Centre – an ancient Graeco-Roman specimen rediscovered in 1984 and carefully conserved over eight years – symbolising the eclectic and global nature of Marlborough’s historical collections.
