Last year, Fishing News featured our research exploring how lobster tagging can help assess the potential of artificial reefs to support fisheries and marine habitats. It was a valuable opportunity to share our work with the wider fishing community.

The project is very much ongoing. In 2025, we continue to monitor tagged lobsters, evaluate reef habitats, and investigate how artificial structures might support biodiversity and sustainable fisheries in Welsh waters.

We look forward to sharing more of our findings as the work progresses.

A project by two universities studying lobster populations on a Welsh wind farm suggests that providing the right kinds of rock armour could see an increase in lobster numbers. Evidence suggests that lobster larvae may be settling directly on the site – though in the absence of capturing settling ...

🎣 We're Back – And We've Been Busy! 🌊

Hello from the Fisheries and Conservation Science Group at Bangor University!

It’s been a little while since we last posted, but the team’s been anything but quiet, with our staff and students hard at work - both in the field and behind the scenes.

We're really pleased to get this page going again. Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing updates on our research, spotlighting student projects, and giving a proper look into the science underpinning marine conservation and sustainable fisheries here in Wales and further afield.

What to expect:
- Photos and stories from recent fieldwork
- Postgrad research on fisheries, shellfish, seabeds, and more
- How our science feeds into marine policy and management
- Opportunities to get involved or learn more

Thanks for sticking with us—keep your eyes peeled for more soon!

Whelk Mark-recapture project is underway in Wales. This project aims to understand the relationship between density of whelk on the ground and pot catch rates. In addition it will estimate the selectivity of whelk pots for different sized whelk. Whelks will be banded and should be easily seen. If you catch a banded whelk please remove the band before landing and let us know! Thanks
