After the winter break students hit the ground running in their first week and start processing the samples from their cruise. Teams join one another in the lab and run through an entire day of instrumental analysis and a bit of data processing too.

At HSU we tend to have lots of short practicals during the semester. But at Bangor they opt for a few longer, more intense practicals each semester. The Prince Madog course is a great example that stretches across two semesters...

Been busy the last couple weeks observing lots of Ocean Science classes here at Bangor. I'll be playing catch up with my posts over next couple days. For now an important reminder:

Like Humboldt State, Bangor University prides itself on getting students into the field in some of nature's most beautiful environments. Here physical oceanography and geography students in ONS-1000 Environmental Data Analysis get a great chance to observe and log glacial sediments on Anglesey Island.

Time again for the travel edition of HOSE! This edition mixes business and pleasure. When I was on my scouting trip to Bangor last November, I was invited on a great field trip to a glacial valley in Snowdonia. I had no idea it would become one of my favorite travel experiences of the sabbatical. Thanks to Lynda Yorke for letting me tag along!

Had a great time observing Rivers, Coasts and Oceans earlier in the week. This module is an option for Ocean Science majors and epitomizes the interdisciplinary character of many of Bangor's classes. Students used ArcGIS to analyze remote topography data (like LIDAR and aerial photos) in search of ancient river channels and flood plains. They head out to the site later in the term to "groundtruth" their analysis with some actual observations. Thanks to Lynda Yorke for letting me join!

This module takes a catchment to marine basin approach, focusing on riverine, coastal and deep marine environments. Bangor University is well known for its ocean program in part because of its location and its stellar ship: the R/V Prince Madog.
