Follow Jeffrey Abell on his sabbatical as he promotes international student exchange for oceanography and marine biology students between Humboldt State University and three world-class teaching & research institutions: Southampton, Bangor and James Cook. Can you see yourself immersed in another culture while you study the marine sciences at world-class teaching and research facilities? If your an

swer is yes to either of these, then follow me on my sabbatical as I promote and develop student exchange for HSU's Oceanography and Marine Biology majors. I'll be visiting three world-class institutions over the next year: University of Southampton in England, Bangor University in Wales and finally James Cook University in Australia. I plan to post my experiences living abroad and learning about these Universities and the people and culture that make them great. If you are a Humboldt State University student right now, I hope to engender your interest in student exchange and give you a sense of what living abroad and studying marine sciences at these institutions would be like. If you are not currenyl a humboldt State University student, I hope to get you interested in our wonderful program of marine courses and that the prospoect of strong international exchange might enourage you to join our oceanography programs.

After the winter break students hit the ground running in their first week and start processing the samples from their cruise. Teams join one another in the lab and run through an entire day of instrumental analysis and a bit of data processing too.

At HSU we tend to have lots of short practicals during the semester. But at Bangor they opt for a few longer, more intense practicals each semester. The Prince Madog course is a great example that stretches across two semesters...

Been busy the last couple weeks observing lots of Ocean Science classes here at Bangor. I'll be playing catch up with my posts over next couple days. For now an important reminder:

The deadline for bilateral exchange applications is Mar 15th. If you are interested you must check out the last informational meeting of the semester next Tuesday Feb 27th from 4-5 pm in the Feuerwerker House. Click below for more info!

Like Humboldt State, Bangor University prides itself on getting students into the field in some of nature's most beautiful environments. Here physical oceanography and geography students in ONS-1000 Environmental Data Analysis get a great chance to observe and log glacial sediments on Anglesey Island.

Time again for the travel edition of HOSE! This edition mixes business and pleasure. When I was on my scouting trip to Bangor last November, I was invited on a great field trip to a glacial valley in Snowdonia. I had no idea it would become one of my favorite travel experiences of the sabbatical. Thanks to Lynda Yorke for letting me tag along!

Also got a chance to see Katrien Van Landeghem's lecture in OSX 2005 Earth and Ocean Observations. She covered acoustic bathymetry using some excellent illustrations, including data from her own research. See below...you California folks have heard of Big Waves of course, but how about Big Sand?

Large sediment waves are striking yet poorly understood seabed features in many shelf seas. Very large sediment waves (3–18m in height) have bee...

Had a great time observing Rivers, Coasts and Oceans earlier in the week. This module is an option for Ocean Science majors and epitomizes the interdisciplinary character of many of Bangor's classes. Students used ArcGIS to analyze remote topography data (like LIDAR and aerial photos) in search of ancient river channels and flood plains. They head out to the site later in the term to "groundtruth" their analysis with some actual observations. Thanks to Lynda Yorke for letting me join!

This module takes a catchment to marine basin approach, focusing on riverine, coastal and deep marine environments. The module will provide a foundation and conceptual framework in which to understand river and marine systems, environmental change and geochronologies. Response to climate change, hum...

Bangor University is well known for its ocean program in part because of its location and its stellar ship: the R/V Prince Madog. When I scouted out the place last November I had the opportunity to join a student cruise...here are some pics of the scenery. Cruise activity photos to be posted later.

Bangor University welcomes over 1000 international students to its campus every year. That includes semester and year-long study abroads. Check out their page and this video to see why it is so attractive:

Many students choose to study at Bangor University, North Wales as visiting study abroad scheme students. Every year, well over 100 students from North, Central and South America, Asia and mainland Europe undertake a semester or a whole year at Bangor and transfer the credits achieved to the home Un...

and OSX-4015: Climate and Climate Change...Stay tuned for my reports!

The module aims to introduce the student to the external forcing factors and internal processes which modulate and control the Earth’s climate system. These factors and processes will be investigated as they have worked in the past, as they are operating right now, and as we expect them to operate...

and OSX-3002: Marine Ecosystems & Processes...

The course aims to provide students with an integrated understanding of the key abiotic and biotic drivers that shape marine communities and habitats. It aspires to give students a framework for understanding the processes that cause marine systems to persist or to change. Drawing on course content....
