On Thursday 9th December at 4pm we’ll be hosting the Physiological Society’s GL Brown Prize Lecture. This year’s lecture ‘Cystic Fibrosis: From Genes to Precision Medicine’ will be given by Professor David Sheppard from the University of Bristol. Further details are on our website

The GL Brown Prize Lecture is awarded annually by The Physiological Society to an outstanding scientist. This year, one of the lectures is presented at the Open University and will be streamed online via Stadium.

Congratulations to Daniel Marin Florido (part-time PhD student at Johnson Matthey) who successfully passed his PhD viva yesterday, the exam panel was Jon Holbrey (Queens University Belfast), Rob Janes & James Bruce.
His PhD title was Separation & Recovery of Base Metals from Waste Streams at Low pH and he was supervised by Simon Collinson, Eleanor Crabb and Paul O’Shaughnessy.

Duncan Banks has successfully obtained an EU grant on the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP https://www.edctp.org/). The project entitled ‘Consortium For Development Of Sustainable Research Based Fellowship Training On Infectious Disease Epidemiology And Biostatistics In Africa’ will work with various partners in Uganda including The Uganda National Institute of Public Health, Uganda Virus Research Institute, The Ugandan Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation, Makerere University, Mbale Clinical Research Institute and Busitema University (based in Mbale, Eastern Uganda).
The EDCTP programme is supported under Horizon 2020, the European Union’s Framework Programme for Research & Innovation. The overarching objective of the programme is to train the next generation of infectious disease field epidemiologists in conducting disease surveillance, outbreak investigations and timely response, and translating data into evidence-based practice in Uganda. Duncan has also been appointed to an honorary position at Busitema University.
