Knowledge Media Institute

Knowledge Media Institute Cognitive and Learning Sciences, Artificial Intelligence and Semantic Technologies, and Multimedia. We chose to call this convergence Knowledge Media.

The Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) was set up in 1995 in recognition of the need for The Open University to be at the forefront of research and development in a convergence of areas that impacted on the OU's very nature: Cognitive and Learning Sciences, Artificial Intelligence and Semantic Technologies, and Multimedia.

Shifting Power: Stories of Artificial Intelligence and Justice, by Dr. Tracie Farrell

In 2022, I received a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and justice. Our research program has explored how global power asymmetries impact different parts of the AI pipeline, the dominant narratives around AI that persist in the literature and the media, and the alternative narratives that emerge from communities most impacted by negative downstream impacts of this technology. In this talk, I will be reflecting on the first two years of my Future Leaders Fellowship, sharing some insights from the project so far, some personal stories about what researching this topic means to me, and some indications of future research for which feedback and collaboration are welcome.

This event will take place on Tuesday 29 October 2024 at 11:30.

Creative engagement and co-design for inclusion
In this presentation, Dr. Nicole Lotz, explores the intersection of creativity, design and learning. Over the past decade, my research has focused on developing inclusive co-design methodologies that empower marginalised groups. Through a series of case studies, I will discuss various projects that have employed these approaches in diverse contexts. Examples include collaborations with FabLabs in Mexico, online social engagement initiatives, and co-designing educational programs with student partners at the Open University. These projects highlight the potential of creative engagement to promote inclusivity, drive social change, and address pressing societal challenges.
