Itโ€™s been a busy year for the Migration, Integration and Social Connections (MISC) team at IGHD, who are undertaking novel community-oriented approaches to understand more about the impact of time and place on refugee integration in Scotland.

If youโ€™re interested in learning more about our research or opportunities to collaborate in this field, get in touch and subscribe to our newsletter (new issue coming soon) at the foot of the MISC Team website: https://buff.ly/3Xx9sMJ

A big thank you to ScrapAntics for supporting our recent MISC Team activities alongside Community Central Halls - CCH and Maryhill Integration Network; and a big thank you, as usual, to our funder, EU AMIF and our project partners - Scottish Refugee Council, WEA Scotland and Bridges Programmes.

Today is ๐ŸŒ

We would like to take this opportunity to highlight our research , particularly our work with New Scots, exploring the many unique pathways to integration, using as a tool to understand outcomes in factors such as employability and housing.

You can find outputs from this research here

Check out publications from the projects of the Migration, Integration and Social Connections (MISC) team here. These publications document findings from our extensive research with diverse populations, typically those seeking refuge or asylum in Scotland and other nations of the United Kingdom.

is a coalition of more than 280 organisations in support of changes in UK Government legislation to allow those seeking asylum the right to work.

Currently, an application can be only be made for the right to work after one year of waiting for an asylum decision has passed.

Our research finds that not having access to work is part of an interplay of correlated factors that delays the process of integration.

We would like to congratulate Zeina Jamal on her recent success in passing her viva. Her PhD thesis, 'Improving Population Health by Addressing Social Determinants of Mental Health', was embedded within the research conducted under the Research Unit on Health in Situations of Fragility (RUHF) funded by the NIHR.

Read a paper related to this research entitled 'Social determinants and mental health needs of Palestine refugees and UNRWA responses in Gaza during the COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative assessment' here: https://buff.ly/42Lr1fm.

Background Due to pre-existing difficulties, refugees are especially susceptible to the negative effects of the pandemic; nonetheless, the pandemicโ€™s effect on this group is still unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of Pales...
