What happens when a tiger shark investigates a £1,000 underwater camera?

Reaseheath lecturer Donovan Lewis has just returned from the Maldives, where he spent two weeks diving with tiger sharks and capturing 360-degree footage for a shark conservation project with Shark Trust.

Now he's bringing his experiences, photography and footage back to campus for our first Reaseheath Public Lecture of 2026/27.

It all starts with an idea. 💡

Yesterday, we celebrated creativity and curiosity at the Scholarship Symposium 2026, and the research being shared showed just how far an idea can take you.

From dog bites and microplastics to zoo visitors, animal behaviour, veterinary pathology and sharks, our scholars shared some fascinating animal science research, including:

Understanding Dog Bite Incidents
Microplastic Exposure Pathways in Dogs
Can You Trust Zoo Visitors? Challenges in Citizen Science
The Last Days of George the Serval
Object Labelling in Animals: What Is It and Who Cares Anyway?
Sharks of Paradise: Collaboration, Communication and Conservation

Different questions, different subjects and different levels of research, from undergraduate case studies through to Masters and PhD research. But each one started with curiosity and a germ of an idea.

The symposium also gave us a chance to look back at the first year of our Research Café, launched last year to bring together people involved in research at all levels, whether they are experienced researchers, undertaking a qualification, supporting research, or simply interested in finding out more.

The Research Café has created a space to share ideas, talk about research, learn from one another and make connections, helping to build a growing research community across Reaseheath.

The symposium was a brilliant reminder that you never quite know where asking a question, spotting something interesting or simply thinking “I wonder…” might lead.

Thank you to all our scholars for sharing their work and giving us plenty to think about.

It’s almost time to move into accommodation 🏡

Leena has a few tips for you if you’re not sure what to bring:
🍽️ plates, bowls, cups/mugs, cutlery - have a few of each in case you have friends round!
🍳 pots, pans and cooking appliances (unless you’re catered!)
🛌 bedding and stuff to decorate your room - make it your own space to unwind

If you forget anything or need bits and bobs while you’re here, Sainsbury’s and B&M are just a short drive or a 30 min walk away!

Our Wildlife Conservation team recently joined families at the Just So Festival 2026 in Rode Heath for their Morning Moth Mob, helping children and adults discover, identify and learn more about some of the incredible moth species found around us.

Key species discovered included the Oak Hook Tip, September Thorn and Straw Dot.

Experiences like this bring together practical skills, ecological knowledge and raise environmental awareness, all things our students develop throughout the BSc Wildlife Conservation and Ecology course.

You will gain hands-on experience in a range of ecological survey techniques, including moth trapping and identification.

Amelia Gresty's Reaseheath journey began with Level 3 Animal Management before she progressed to the Foundation Degree in Canine Behaviour and Training.

In November, she graduated with her Foundation Degree and is now set to completing her top-up year, working towards her full honours degree.

Along the way, she built her confidence, developed her practical skills and found her passion for the canine industry.

“I hated school and struggled to get through the day, but at Reaseheath, I started to enjoy education.”

Amelia hopes to build a career in the canine industry, with a particular interest in training assistance dogs.

“For children in care, university can feel unachievable. Coming to Reaseheath showed me I’m capable of more than I ever thought.”

“Before coming to Reaseheath, I had a lot of difficulties participating in education. I took a course on Level 3 Animal Management where I learnt more about canine, as my course specifically had a grooming section which I thoroughly enjoyed.

“In my final year at college there was not a lot of pressure for us to go to university. At the time, I had a lot of struggles with finding accommodation and I was actually homeless. I spoke to my Personal Advisor and they suggested that going to university would be a way to have accommodation while studying something I enjoyed.

“I took myself to a big UCAS event in Manchester where all the universities were showing what courses they had, and on the very last row, I found Reaseheath. None of the other universities there had a course specific to canine and the staff spoke through with me about it and from there I knew this was the course I would take.

“I absolutely adore my course from the content to the teachers that teach me. Studying something I genuinely enjoy helps me to focus on the subject and put effort into my learning. I personally love how our learning is also used in practical sessions showing how the theory links up and can make a difference. Having the support of my teachers and having them believe in me, even when sometimes I do not, is amazing.

“I also love having the support of Liz Coles, Student Support and Engagement Manager. Even just to knock on her door and ask questions can really help as she is so quick at putting things into place. By using the support team to help with my learning plan and adapting it when needed, I was able to present in front of more people this year than I even thought I would.

“Giving university a try is always worth it especially when you choose to study something you are interested in. By coming here it has shown me I am able to do things I thought I wouldn’t be. I have also made a great group of friends here, and it is easier to make friends at Reaseheath because we all have similar interests.”
