JOAN/ ŽANA

Director: Živilė Mičiulytė

Joan is 25 years old. She finished actors’ studies in Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre and was about to start acting in Russian Drama Theatre. But a war started in Ukraine and she decided to go there. Joan collects and transports materials for the soldiers to the battlefield in Ukraine. Joan tries to keep balance between being one day in war, another in peace. The film is a journey from one world to another and the line between these worlds is not clear. You must reconsider the meaning of “reality”. Everything is mixed up: the war is “there”, but it could be “here” anytime.

THE TROLLEYBUS-MAN/ ŽMOGUS VIELABRAUKIS

Director: Jonas Trukanas

“The Trolleybus-Man” is an absurd superhero comedy about a mechanic turned superhero who’s fighting to preserve thing he loves the most – the trolleybuses.

Vilnius Trolleybus Park (no one really knows why the place where trolleybuses are docked is called “park”) is sold to a young investor, who wants to change trolleybuses to more convenient high-tech, wireless, pilotless vehicles. Needless to say, that this high-tech wonder will require very little maintenance, so the drivers and supporting staff will be fired.

But it is way more than that. Without the old trolleybuses the city is never going to be the same. And in this darkest hour the hero arises. An ex-mechanic who shall fight the technical revolution to save the heritage of trolleybuses. And although he is not suited to be a superhero – he will do his best to drive the capitalist oppressors away.

The fourth and final category of our event - HOW WE FIGHT - explores the themes of courage, protest and activism.

The heroes of the films do not flee from the challenges, and they choose to stand their ground, fighting for what truly matters to them. From the comic absurdity of the story about a modern self-made hero, the Trolleybus-man, to the serious question of how the war forever changes your perception of the world raised in the documentary film Joan, we invite you to think of what it takes to choose to fight against all odds.

INTERROGATOR/ TARDYTOJAS

Director: Jurgis Matulevičius

This film centers on a man who is unwittingly confronting his own brutality and seeks to analyze a primordial capacity for human cruelty. Set in the nineteen seventies, the opening scenes introduce an Interrogator stalking citizens deemed suspicious: artists, accused killers, and those with suspected political motivation. Analyzing the smallest details of their lives, he tries to identify with his suspects and understand their thoughts, actions and personalities. This film is a glimpse inside his brutal routine. He begins with a rehearsal like procedure. His office is his backstage and the interrogated one is his audience. The theme is murder. Action- The accused (A. Gluosnis), is directly involved in historical events of his own play. As he thoroughly and methodically prepares questions, he begins to answer these questions unwittingly. We see the Interrogators personality splinter into more characters. He loses himself in a final interrogation and becomes the target of his own malice. No actual interrogation is shown, but a preparation for it, no manhunt, but how a stalker becomes the hunter and then the hunted. We are witness to his inner conflict. The Interrogator becomes a mirror reflection of those he had convicted: their lives, their feelings. Those he condemned live on in his mind, body and soul. Little by little they push and break him. His own su***de is the final act of this vicious dramatisation.

The third category of films - DO WE HAVE A CHOICE? - is intended to raise the questions of free will and power over the individual's life.

Do our choices matter, or is free will a dangerous illusion? Are we in control of the situation, or are the power figures who historically so often treat others as mere numbers in their own game ultimately making decisions for us? On what foundation do we base our choices and judgements? How many options of choice do we see being oppressed or misguided?

Come and explore those questions with us! 🕵️‍♀️
