🎨✨ From Newcastle College to the Mercury Prize!

We're so excited to reveal the incredible pin badges our talented students have helped design for this year's Mercury Prize! 🏆

Students from The Mandela Collective, our in-house creative agency, have been working with Creative Heritage Studios CIC to create bespoke gifts for the artists and VIPs who attended the awards at Utilita Arena Newcastle.

Each badge features a unique design, created as part of a special collaboration that has given our students the chance to put their creative skills into practice on a national stage.

How amazing is it to think that some of the biggest names in British music took home something created by our very own students? 🤩

What an incredible day! 🙌

Today, we welcomed BBC Radio 5 live to Newcastle College and Newcastle Sixth Form College for a morning of live broadcasting!

Our Principal, Jon Ridley, joined BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast, before Nicky Campbell hosted the BBC Teen Summit at our HE Hub, giving 50 young people the chance to share their views with a national audience.

⭐ Our students are taking centre stage at the Mercury Prize 🎶

One of the biggest nights in British music returns to Utilita Arena Newcastle next week, and Newcastle College students will be right at the heart of the action.

🎨 Our Mandela Collective students co-created bespoke pin badges for Mercury Prize nominees and VIPs.

👨‍🍳 Our trainee chefs will be preparing food for arena crews throughout the week, with our Canteen Club team creating the starter for the awards dinner.

🎤 Our Travel and Tourism students will be welcoming guests, while Chefs’ Academy students support front-of-house hospitality on the night.

We're delighted to be playing such an important role in bringing this incredible event to life, right here in Newcastle!

Building industry connections beyond the classroom 🏛️🤝

Students across our Law and Criminology courses recently welcomed the Northumbria Violence Reduction Unit as part of an exciting live brief project.

The partnership was created to help learners gain valuable industry insight and real-world experience in a sector where traditional work placements can be difficult to access.

Throughout the project, students will work with professionals from the VRU and other partner organisations, developing knowledge, employability skills and a deeper understanding of careers within the justice and criminology sector.

They'll also have the opportunity to complete VRU Ambassador training and showcase their work at a professional poster exhibition later this year.

A huge thank you to Steven Hume, the wider VRU team and everyone at the Northumbria Police and the Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner's Office for supporting our learners and helping create these fantastic opportunities.

From Newcastle College to the stage at Salon International! 💇‍♂️🏆

A massive congratulations to our Level 3 Hairdressing student Cameron Lafferty, who was named a Next Gen Winner in the Diva Styling Competition! 🎉

As part of his prize, Cameron travelled to London to showcase his skills on stage at Salon International, one of the biggest events in the hairdressing industry.

What an incredible opportunity to show off his talent and gain experience alongside industry professionals.

Things were heating up at Newcastle College this week! 🔥🚒

Our Sport and Uniformed Public Services students swapped the classroom for some hands-on fire safety training, putting their skills to the test with industry expert Simon Cataldo from Cataldo Training Ltd.

From handling fire hoses to learning how to safely use fire blankets and CO₂ extinguishers, students got stuck into two days of practical training designed to build confidence and develop valuable skills for their future careers!

Designs created by our students are now brightening up the fencing opposite the Newcastle favourite, celebrating everything from local landmarks and Geordie culture to plenty of black and white 🖤🤍

Created as part of our Future Heritage project, it’s another brilliant opportunity for our students to see their work leave the classroom and become part of the city that inspired it.
