MFA Newcastle University

MFA Newcastle University The Fine Art MFA is a two-year full time studio-based course at Newcastle University.

The two-year, studio-based Fine Art MFA programme is designed to enable students to further develop their careers as professional artists. The one-year, MA in Creative Arts Practice directly engages with creative identity and the cutting edge of creative digital practice. Together the MFA and a number of CAP students are working to bring a number of joint collaborative shows. They have a broad ran

ge of artistic practices, including video, painting, sculpture, digital media, drawing, photography, sound, and installation.

“The two-year Fine Art course gives these artists the opportunity to explore their practice in depth,” says Head of Fine Art Richard Talbot.

Featuring work of students Nancy Daykin, Mark Duffy, David Loftus, Marlene Rösch, Sumire Sakuma, Lauren Shakespeare, Annie Weatherley and Freddy Williams, ‘Placed’ might constitute a point, a position, a settlement, a community, the feelings and histories that unfold over time. This exhibition highlights emerging intersections between the artists and seeks to question how the exhibition making process is both similar and different to the mechanisms of place making.

“FAILURES” was the first group show of the YR1 MFA 2024 Students. The show was open for one day only on Thursday, 31/10/2024 but had a relaxed opening on Wednesday, 30/10/2024. It was wonderful to connect and display our works to the rest of the department with our group show in the long gallery. .shakespeare.art

Sabah al-khair / صباح الخير

Good morning from with my second day of MFA Newcastle University social media takeover and a preview of my works to be exhibited this week as part of the Pipelines: Newcastle University MFA Degree Show .

Islamic motifs and Arabic letters define my memory of 1980s Libya within my work, which is also heavily imbued with the colour green. The colour was adopted by the dictatorship of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, in power during my childhood there, and is also known as a sacred colour in Islam. Flags, statues, and other signifiers of national identity are a constant subject I find myself wanting to explore.

As-salamu alaykum / السلام عليكم

I’m Alia Gargum, and I’m honoured to be taking over the Newcastle University Master in Fine Art social media to share a little about my new work “this was a mosque / هذا كان مسجد” which will be shown for the first time within the Hatton Gallery as part of the MFA graduate show this August, with our private view at 6pm on the 16th.

My work mainly consists of sculptures, made from hand-treated steel, fabric, and reclaimed wood. These are made to resemble aspects of a culture and personal history that is continually being abstracted due to forced migration. The range of meaning and symbolism within colour, language and motifs across my dual Libyan and British cultures is expressed through the tension and weight that I apply to my works while manipulating forms.
