Very pleased to see that in the Guardian University Guide for 2018, Northumbria as an institution is at 48th and the Sociology degree programme is up to 48th from 62nd a year ago. A great opportunity for students graduating this year:

Are you wondering what your next chapter will read?

International Service is offering fully funded volunteering placements in Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Ghana and Palestine. Each placement provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience working in a different country, allowing you to immerse yourself into a new culture off the beaten track and develop new skills to add to your employability.

Right now, we are recruiting for our autumn departures in September. The placements are part of the International Citizen Service (ICS) programme and will last for 12 weeks with the first week being an in-country induction. We also have departures next year running in January, March and June.

This Autumn, you could be working with our partners on various projects which can range from education that fosters free expression in Bolivia, to supporting people with disabilities so that they may play a more active role in their own socio-economic development in Burkina Faso.

All costs for the placement will be completely covered as the scheme is funded by the UK Government through the Department for International Development; we cover all of your costs and provide a living allowance. You will also get the chance to develop fundraising skills as we link you with our fundraising officer to work together to reach a target of £800 before you depart.

Person specification:
You must 18-25 AND be either a UK citizen, EU/EEA citizen who has lived in the UK for a minimum of 12 months, or have indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

The reception will be held after the Graduation Ceremony, from 12.30 on Wednesday 15 July in Lipman 204. Congratulations to our Seeing Sociologically winners! Akanksha, (the overall winner), Helena Fagan, Rea Goodwin and Katie Hurst, (the runners-up) each submitted an interesting, thought-provoking set of images which got the judges mulling over visual representations of sociology.

We had a lovely celebratory event on Monday with our winners, the Politics crew, staff, judges (Dawn Manny of Cardiff Uni and Helen Ford of Tyne Tees TV), and former colleagues, where we also celebrated 50 years of Sociology at Northumbria. Many thanks to everyone who made the competitions happen and who submitted entries.

We think this will be an annual event so have your cameras at the ready....!

Do you need to be cheered up after the election result?

Come and join us for a glass of wine and piece of cake on Monday 11 May, 4-6pm, Squires reception! We'll be displaying entries to the Seeing Sociologically and Seeing Politics competitions and giving prizes to the winners.

We'll also be celebrating 50 years of Sociology at Northumbria and the end of term.

I hope you've seen your email letting you know that we've decided to extend the deadline to this competition to midday on Tuesday 5 May, so you have the bank holiday weekend to work on your entry.

If you enter the competition, you have a very good chance of winning an ipad! (or alternative prize).

To win an ipad (or £200) or one of three runners-up prizes, you just need to submit a single photo or a set of photos (maximum of 5) which you have taken and which capture a sociological view, represent a sociological idea or a way of seeing sociologically, along with up to 1 A4 page of text which explains what the image means to you.

Full info is available in the guide attached to the email you've been sent.

All students, whether or not you’ve entered the competition, are invited to the launch on Monday 11 May 4-6pm. More info to follow.

It was great to see students and staff at the NE Summit on 'Lad Culture' yesterday, as well as our own Lizi Gray who was there as an SU rep (and, did you know? she's been nominated for SU Annual Awards as Campaigner of the Year! whoop whoop!)

The summit was responding to research showing that 2/3 of women experience sexual harassment during their studies, and 1:7 experience serious sexual or physical assault. Grim statistics. You can read a recent article reporting them here http://soc.sagepub.com/content/49/2/305)

This article links HE neoliberalisation and ‘lad cultures’, drawing on interviews and focus groups with women students. We argue that retro-sexist ‘laddish’ forms of masculine competitiveness and misogyny have been reshaped by neoliberal rationalities to become modes of consumerist sexualised audit.…
