Join us for the Galena exhibition at Newcastle Arts Centre. The preview opens on Saturday 13 June with the exhibition accessible from Monday 15 June - Saturday 27 June.

Galena tracks a landscape awaiting development. Through sound, film, painting and print, Julia Heslop, Taryn Edmonds and Martin Heslop explore the site of the Elswick Lead Works on the River Tyne, where a new housing development is planned. These artworks trace this vanished industry, considering the origins of the galena (lead ore) from the mines of the North Pennines, to the processing and production plants on the banks of the Tyne. But the exhibition also offers a fresh eye and ear to the present day ecologies: from the abandoned factory buildings, to the pigeon crees, and the hundreds of silver birch trees now making the place their home. It poses questions about how the past and present-day stories of this remarkable landscape are valued within the new housing development proposed for the site.

Join us for 'The Northern Housing Question' a one-day symposium which will examine issues pertaining to: landownership and land values, the private rental sector, social housing and housing need and decision making in housing and housing futures. The event will hear from a range of cross sector speakers, as well as academics and activists.

Confirmed speakers include: Isaac Rose (Greater Manchester Tenants’ Union), Dan Wilson Craw (Generation Rent), Vicky McDermott (Director of Housing and Communities, Newcastle City Council), Tracy Guy (Shelter North East) and Jimm Reed (Leeds Community Homes).

Understanding housing crisis as being geographically variable, this symposium will look at the issues specific (but not exclusive) to northern England.

Brutalist London, the latest release from Owen Hopkins (Director of the Farrell Centre) is now available to purchase.

We held the Re:New Towns two day symposium at Newcastle on 16-17 April with a jam-packed timetable which saw us host four keynote speakers, two hands-on workshops, 24 paper presentations across eight sessions and an exhibition tour.
