School of Modern Languages - Newcastle University

School of Modern Languages - Newcastle University A multi-disciplinary school based in the North East of England teaching languages at UG and PG level. Study with us: https://www.ncl.ac.uk/sml/

We are a medium-sized School of Modern Languages located at the Old Library Building at the heart of the beautiful campus of Newcastle University. You can study Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese with us, as well as sample Catalan, Dutch and Italian. We are able to offer an unusually wide and exciting choice within a modern languages degree, with nearly half of our over 40 m

embers of staff from all over the world. While languages are the cornerstone of what we do and teach, we believe that it is crucial to also engage with the cultures associated with these languages. In an age of increasing globalization and internationalization, modern languages graduates with intercultural competence are needed. This means that our graduates enjoy good employability prospects.

Three MA T&I students were selected to support the symposium 'Bridging Seas and Centuries: The Beiyang Sailors Legacy' on 21-22 July, 2025. At Newcastle University, students are never far from history and opportunities, and they are also trained and challenged to make history. Coincidentally, not long after this symposium, the panel that tells the story about the sailors was installed. The text was translated by our MA T&I student about an year ago.

On June 20th, our MA Translating and Interpreting (MA T&I) student, Mingze Yang, played a key role in facilitating a collaboration between the National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA) and the Nansha District of Guangzhou, China. Mingze provided Chinese-to-English interpreting during the meeting, while the Chinese delegation brought their own interpreter for English-to-Chinese—who turned out to be one of our former MA T&I students!

We’re proud to see our students contributing to international cooperation and communication, and we look forward to supporting more of NICA’s events in the future. If you're planning an in-person or virtual conference and need language support, feel free to get in touch.

At Newcastle University, we consider the city and wider community as our classroom. 13 MA Translating and Interpreting students put their skills to test during guided tours for the exhibition at Farrell Centre by consecutively interpreting their tour guides.

Embedded in this type of activity is the objective of connecting international students to the local culture and community. These situated learning opportunities are also created to give students real world experience, and challenges that they would not encounter in the classroom. Immediately after our visits, the students received feedback during a debrief.

🎉 Celebrating Success at the “Chinese Bridge” Competition!
We’re thrilled to announce that two of our students, Charlie Rutnam (T901, Chinese and Spanish) and Daisy Trillo (Combined Honors, Chinese and Film Studies), have both won third-place prizes at the UK Regional Final of the prestigious “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition and the Chinese Competition of Business Innovations, held in London on 5th June.
Charlie won third place in the Chinese Proficiency category and has been invited to Beijing this summer for the global finals – with all expenses covered! His award was presented by Counselor Liang Yan from the Chinese Consulate-General in Manchester.
Daisy also earned a third-place win in the Business Innovations competition for her outstanding ideas and language skills.
The competition, organised by the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation, is a global platform for students to showcase their Chinese language abilities and cultural understanding.
👏 A huge congratulations to Charlie and Daisy — your dedication and achievement are truly inspiring! 🌟
