EVENT: Exploring Classical Northumberland with Dr Susanna Phillippo
Date: Sunday 10th November
Location: Corbridge

Join us for the next trip in our series exploring Northumberland’s classical and historical heritage! This time, we’ll be visiting Corbridge Roman town and the charming village of Corbridge.

Departure: 12:35 pm from Stand A, Eldon Square bus station (near Marks & Spencer, not Haymarket). Please arrive by 12:25 pm if possible.
Return: Approximately 5:30 pm to Newcastle.
Cost: Max £4 for transport (students 21 and under with ID pay £2). Entry to the Roman site is free

Corbridge was a vital Roman settlement, predating Hadrian's Wall. It’s rich with history and scenic views, offering:
• Expansive ruins to explore, plus a recently refurbished museum.
• The chance to walk along an original Roman road (the Stanegate).
• Corbridge village: One of the loveliest spots in the Tyne Valley, featuring quaint tea shops and pubs, including one in a historic 14th-century Pele Tower.
• St. Andrew’s Church, which integrates Roman stonework into its design.

We’ll begin our tour with a look around Corbridge’s historic village and church, followed by a scenic riverside walk (about 3/4 mile, weather permitting) to the Roman site and museum. We’ll return via a shorter route to visit a few other historic buildings, and then relax at one of Corbridge’s atmospheric tea shops or pubs, before catching the bus back to Newcastle.

Practicalities:
• Footwear and clothing: Please wear sturdy shoes with good grip for muddy or slippery areas, and dress for the weather. Both the river path and the Roman site can be challenging underfoot, especially after rain.
• Lunch: Please bring a packed lunch to eat on the bus or beforehand
• University Requirement: If you have any medical condition that might affect you on this trip, please inform in advance and bring any necessary medication or supplies.

All are welcome. Feel free to show up on the day, but please email [email protected] in advance if you’re interested.

Date: Wednesday, 30th October
Location: Cherryburn and Tyne Riverside

Join us for the next in a series of trips that explore Newcastle and the surrounding region through the lens of history and classical antiquity.

Departure: Meet at 12:25pm at Stand B, Newcastle Eldon Square bus station
Return: Approximately 4:30pm (direct bus) or 5:15pm (via a stop at Prudhoe/Ovingham for a café visit).
Cost: The price of your bus journey (£3 for those 21 or under; max £6 for others). Entry to Cherryburn is free.

Cherryburn, typically open only on Thursdays and Fridays, is opening exclusively for us! This 18th-century cottage is the birthplace of Thomas Bewick, the renowned Northumbrian wood engraver and natural history author. Bewick is famed for his illustrations in Aesop’s Fables and his well-known book on British Birds, which even receives a mention in Jane Eyre!

Highlights of the visit include:
o An insight into Bewick's life and work in his childhood home.
o An exhibition showcasing traditional woodcut printing.

Weather permitting, we’ll end with a short riverside walk along one of the Tyne’s scenic trails.

What to bring:
• Bring a packed lunch to eat on the bus or before departure.
• Footwear suitable for walking shoes—the trails can be quite muddy!

Everyone is welcome. Feel free to show up on the day, but please email [email protected] in advance if you’re interested. If you plan to drive, let us know, and we’ll coordinate a meeting point.
