About Us
We felt a new name for our Bed and Breakfast business would give us a fresh start. Something different, something that would reflect us, the house itself and of course our amazing location so close to the coast, river and mountain. We’d never thought that finding the right name would be so difficult. Whilst searching we discovered that most of the names we liked were already used by other properties or businesses either in Newport or in other coastal towns nearby.
One day a very good friend of ours, Lowri, came up with an idea of naming the house after a boat. She brought us an old book with a list of boats that were moored in the Cwm in the early 19th century. She also pointed at one with the name of ECTON specifically, as the name of the captain was Evan Rees. Just like our Evan Rees, obviously – it seemed that it was meant to be. Then, a few weeks later, we met the daughter of Jimmy – the owner of the property that was on the site before the present house was built. We discovered that he was a merchant sailor in his younger years, and she said that Jimmy would have liked the name Ecton House.
We met when working together at the Golden Lion Hotel and Restaurant in Newport. Evan at that time working as a chef and Magda as a waitress. Before that, Evan worked mostly in construction management and building work around the whole of the UK. Then he stumbled into the hospitality industry by running his own pub and hotel, The Sun Inn in Marlborough – Wiltshire for six years, before he moved to Newport. Magda has a lot of experience in hospitality by working in many different pubs and restaurants. After finishing five years of studying at university in Slovakia, Magda moved to Newport and started working at the Golden Lion as a waitress, later as the assistant restaurant manager.
Before running Ecton house we worked together at Cilwendeg mansion as a live in estate manager and housekeeper. We gained a great deal of experience looking after the family and hosting for various events, from weekend stays by multiple families to larger parties, birthdays etc. The job included providing meals, housekeeping, and managing the renovation of the building and grounds. We knew we worked well together and wanted to do something similar for ourselves. We both love working with people and based on our experience have been great hosts. We have put our hearts and souls into this project and hope to meet your expectations. We know you will enjoy your stay and be able to relax in Ecton house.
