This is a lovely perspective. Differences? Disorder? Disability? Language can have such an impact.

This Sensory Awareness Month, we are focusing on taking the stigma out of sensory differences and working to build a better understanding of sensory health. Have you ever wondered what the difference between a difference, disorder, and disability is? Is there a right or wrong way to address a symptom or attribute? Today, we are breaking down these different terms and answering some of those questions we might be afraid to ask. Ultimately, the language we use isn’t as important as making sure we honor the individual and support the process in each of us becoming our favorite selves.

Do your part this , and help spread awareness and understanding of the importance of our sensory health!

This is worth sharing. ADHD is not caused by parenting style or household dysfunction (as the stigma may have you believe). It's in the DNA...like hair colour...

5.

ADHD is heterogenetic.
Meaning it is either in your genes, or it isn’t.

74% of those with the genes have expressed ADHD.

This is important as often comes with blame, shame and stigma that can be hard for parents. The first thing I do with any family or in groups is try to take this away. We need to get solution focussed and blame and shame have no place here. And anyway, your children are perfectly imperfect, just as they are.

True that the environment has a role to play in whether the genes activate or not, but the environment alone cannot ‘cause’ ADHD. So parents don’t cause ADHD other than by potentially handing it down through their genes or in who they choose to parent with. 🤗🤩

September can be more Januaryish than January is.. a time when people throw themselves in to new things or sit in discomfort knowing something needs to change..

A comfort zone is a lovely place, but nothing grows there.. only when we feel safe, secure and challenged can we learn or make changes.
This is true of everyone.. kids in school, mums who are ready for something more, team members at work.. we all have the same functions in our brains. They work best when we are comfortable and feel safe and when the climate encourages and facilitates high standards.

What are you pushing yourself to do this September?
How secure do you feel in your surroundings as a starter for 10?
Is everyone around you supportive?

Here are some familiar issues that your child may face in school and useful stratehies to support them. Don't be afraid to talk to your child's teacher about putting some specific things in place to help. You don't need to have a statement to have your needs met as many of these approaches can be simply implemented.

Impulsive behavior. Incomplete homework. Inconsistent focus. Whatever your child's school challenges, these teacher-approved accommodations can put some real muscle behind his 504 Plan and put the attention back on learning.

Executive function and emotional control walk hand in hand. Stress and emotional flooding affect how children with ADHD (or any Executive function difficulties) learn, play, engage with classmates, follow directions, and retain information.

When they enter a heightened state of arousal, their ADHD brain wiring can interfere with social-emotional learning and sabotage self-regulation, making it difficult to access the curriculum, respond appropriately, reframe challenges, react with strategies, or problem solve.

Here are some ways that schools and parents can help.

Emotional regulation is a life-long skill that yields benefits in school, work, and relationships. Here are simple strategies for teaching kids to recognize, name, and mange their intense ADHD emotions.
