Calling all Chinese-to-English Translators✨ Applications are OPEN for A Symphony of Island and Literature: 2026 Workshop for Translating Taiwan Literature.

From 2021 to 2025, BCLT has collaborated with the National Museum of Taiwan Literature (NMTL) to deliver a series of Taiwan literature translation workshops with the view to nurture a new generation of literary translators. This intensive and immersive training program is tailored for translators of Taiwan literature into English, consisting of practical translation exercises, panel discussions, and visits to places of literary and cultural heritage.

The workshop will feature internationally acclaimed translator Jeremy Tiang and senior editor Dennis Zhou as mentors, joined by Taiwanese authors, and literary translators, agents, and publishers from Finland, Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom, and other countries. Through a rich program, the workshop aims to strengthen participants' skills in translating Taiwan literature, deepen their engagement with Taiwan’s literature, culture and languages, broaden their networks, explore professional development opportunities in literary translation, and foster cross-cultural dialogue.

A total of 20 participants will be admitted. Applicants aged 18 and over, from Taiwan and overseas, with a passion for translating Taiwan literature into English are welcome to apply, including emerging translators, working professionals, and undergraduate/graduate students from both domestic and international backgrounds.

💰️ All expenses during the workshop will be fully covered by the organizer, including all course fees, lunch, insurance, 5 nights’ accommodation.

📅 The workshop will take place over 6 days from 9-14 November 2026

📍 National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Tainan.

📢 Calling all translators - we need your views and insights on our campaign.

Five years on from its launch, we’re working with Dr Pete Freeth (London Metropolitan University) to find out more about the campaign’s impact.

Pete’s project starts with an all-important survey for translators, exploring perspectives on the campaign and experiences with front-cover credit.

Your responses will give us vital insights into the current state of front-cover credit and will help us provide members with further support to achieve front-cover credit in future.

The survey is open until Friday 19 June and should take around 15 minutes to complete.

How do we relate to literary translation, and how is literary translation relational? Do we view it as a job, an art-form, both, or something else entirely, and to what degree do our backgrounds and temperaments play a part in this view? How and why might our personal histories draw us towards a profession that hovers somewhat uneasily on the edges of the publishing industry, a profession that requires both a high level of emotional intelligence and an ability to at times ignore the messages from our body telling us that our working conditions are less than favourable? How do we retain a love for our work while simultaneously questioning the limits of this love?

In this talk, BCLT Translator-in-Residence, Rosalind Harvey will share an excerpt from her work-in-progress, a book exploring translation, therapy and relationships, and which uses attachment theory as an imperfect lens to examine our attraction to and conflicts with texts, publishing and creative labour.

🦅 Our first poetry workshop from our collaboration with the Aga Khan Centre starts this Saturday! Join April Yee to explore the thin line between art and poetry through this poetry and collage workshop.

Inspired by the Aga Khan Centre’s Canticle of the Birds exhibition—itself rooted in The Conference of the Birds, the 12th-century Persian poem by the Sufi poet Farid ud-Din Attar—this workshop series continues the exhibition’s spirit of translation and transformation.

Lovers of words in all languages welcome—poets and non-poets, translators and non-translators.
