“Having you both watch us grow into doctors is such an honour”.

At Edge Hill you’ll find community, connection, a home – and we know a big part of that is made possible by the wonderful people you meet during your time here.

This year, a group of Medicine graduates showed just how much those relationships can mean. They invited Bev and Pauline, housekeepers in Catalyst who had got to know them during many late-night study sessions, to sit on the front row at their graduation 💜.

“No matter how far we dive into this new journey of ours, you will both always hold a special place in our hearts”, read a thank you card for Bev and Pauline.

While summer wildfires often grab the headlines, extreme heat and drought are quietly having a massive impact on Britain's wildlife closer to home. 🌿🦋

Unlike species in other parts of the world, our native plants and animals haven't evolved to cope with prolonged dry spells.

In a new article, Paul Ashton, Professor of Botany at Edge Hill University, explores how parched landscapes and dry ditches trigger cascading consequences that last long after the rain returns.

From heat-stressed garden birds and struggling aquatic ecosystems to disrupted food chains threatening specialised species like the northern brown argus butterfly, the impacts ripple all the way up the food chain.

The good news? There are simple things we can all do right now to help local wildlife in our gardens:

🐦 Provide a shallow trough of water for birds to drink and bathe.

🌼 Leave lawn "weeds" like cat’s ear to provide essential nectar and pollen for insects.

🌿 Let parts of the garden grow taller to create vital shade and cool spots.

For second-year Drama student Molly, saying yes to new opportunities has been one of the most rewarding parts of her university life.

From scriptwriting and directing to delivering drama workshops in primary schools, the variety of experiences on the course has helped her develop new skills and discover a passion for teaching.

We’re shining a light on inspirational Edge Hill teaching alumnus Dafydd Helps-Fursse, who is preparing to take on an incredible South Pole expedition in support of men’s mental health.

Just two years after rowing across the Atlantic in one of the world’s toughest endurance challenges, Dafydd is setting his sights on another extraordinary feat — tackling a crossing of the South Pole. His career and adventures have taken him around the world, but Dafydd says Edge Hill remains a place that feels like home and played an important role in shaping both his personal and professional journey.

🎓 Dafydd graduated from Edge Hill in 2014 with a BSc (Hons) Science with Physics with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), having secured his place through Clearing. Reflecting on his time at Edge Hill, Dafydd said: “Edge Hill is a home. It’s a place I could walk around comfortably now. I would recommend attending Edge Hill to any student seeking a university education somewhere they are supported, accepted and challenged to grow. I always found the staff really cared for the students and wanted to make a positive contribution to society.”

Today is National Secondhand Wardrobe Day, a great time to think about the value of giving clothes a second life ♻️.

At Edge Hill, our Interview Clothing Collection does just that – helping students access smart, professional looks for interviews, placements or work, all while keeping donated clothes in use.

The collection is made possible through donations from staff, students and the wider community, with students able to choose an outfit and get access to tailored careers and interview support alongside it. Since launching, more than 200 students have accessed the service 👗👔.

So, this National Secondhand Wardrobe Day, why not consider donating something you no longer wear, giving it a chance to be part of someone else’s story. We are accepting donations of smart clothes, accessories and shoes that would be acceptable for an interview or suitable work wear. Please drop donations at Catalyst helpdesk.
