Thank you to everyone who joined us for Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt’s last public lecture as Principal of Jesus College, “Silicon Spires: Oxford in the Age of AI”. The talk explored key questions around the future of AI, including its application, ethics and governance, with a particular focus on Oxford’s role in this evolving landscape. The event was chaired by Professor Jim Naismith and preceded by a drinks reception in College.

The weather in Oxford has felt so summery over the last two weeks! ☀️

“I hear the wind among the trees
Playing celestial symphonies;
I see the branches downward bent,
Like keys of some great instrument.
And over me unrolls on high
The splendid scenery of the sky,
Where through a sapphire sea the sun
Sails like a golden galleon,
Towards yonder cloud-land in the West,
Towards yonder Islands of the Blest,
Whose steep sierra far uplifts
Its craggy summits white with drifts.”

(from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, ‘A Day of Sunshine’)

The Cheng Yu Tung Building affords us a range of fascinating perspectives, including this one of the intersection between Turl Street and Brasenose Lane. 👀

Thanks to the generosity of alumni we have reached our target to secure funding for a student reading for an MSc in Statistical Sciences in memory of Peter Clifford!

Established in memory of a much admired Fellow and Tutor in Mathematics, Peter served at Jesus from 1976 to 2010 inspiring those in his charge. This new studentship will support a brilliant graduate student at Jesus College in the 2027 academic year and provide high-level training in a subject that is increasingly important in the modern world. Thank you to everyone who supported the appeal!

Taking time out of revision to catch up with friends in the spring sunshine.

“Love is like the wild rose-briar,
Friendship like the holly-tree—
The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms
But which will bloom most constantly?
The wild rose-briar is sweet in spring,
Its summer blossoms scent the air;
Yet wait till winter comes again
And who will call the wild-briar fair?
Then scorn the silly rose-wreath now
And deck thee with the holly’s sheen,
That when December blights thy brow
He still may leave thy garland green.”

(Emily Brontë, ‘Love and Friendship’)
