A beautiful image of Second Quad heralds our first of September☀️

"Departing summer hath assumed
An aspect tenderly illumed,
The gentlest look of spring;
That calls from yonder leafy shade
Unfaded, yet prepared to fade,
A timely carolling."

(from William Wordsworth, 'September, 1819')

We are pleased to share this 1966 BBC Archive documentary, We Live and Learn, which explores undergraduate life across Oxford, Cardiff and Aberystwyth – including a look at student life here at Jesus College. The film offers a wonderful snapshot of College life 60 years ago.📽🎞 Does this bring back any memories from your own student days? Let us know in the comments!👇 Many thanks to Karen Kirkham (1983, Jurisprudence) for sharing the link to this documentary with us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6zgn1kNFLA

This August we hosted students for our annual Summer School in partnership with the Welsh Government’s Seren Network, given them a true taste of life here at Jesus and at Oxford.
Over the past five years, an average of 51% of our Seren Summer School attendees have gone on to apply to Oxford – achieving an average offer rate of 27% and consistently outperforming both the Welsh and UK national averages.

We would like to extend our special thanks to alumnus Oliver Thomas (2000, Economics and Management) and his family for their generous support of the Welsh Access Fund, which made this year's summer school possible. We are also deeply grateful to all our alumni whose continued support of College’s broader access and outreach initiatives helps inspire the next generation of Oxford students.

As Oxford continues in drought, we were pleased that some much needed rain fell on our quads this week! 🌦️

"How beautiful is the rain!
After the dust and heat,
In the broad and fiery street,
In the narrow lane,
How beautiful is the rain!
How it clatters along the roofs,
Like the tramp of hoofs
How it gushes and struggles out
From the throat of the overflowing spout!"

(from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 'Rain in Summer')

Two portraits of former Jesus College Principals have recently been added to the collection of paintings in the college’s Dining Hall. A new portrait of recently-retired Principal Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt (2015-2026), painted by Benjamin Sullivan, now hangs to the right of the Hall fireplace. To the left is a portrait of former Principal Ernest Hardy (1921-1925) painted by Henry Lamb. The portrait shows Hardy as blind, and research suggests that he is the only known Head of House of an Oxbridge college to be elected after becoming blind. 🔎Read more: https://www.jesus.ox.ac.uk/college-reveals-new-hall-portraits-of-former-principals/

A landmark study of more than 3,400 children, co-led by Senior Research Fellow Professor Chris Griffiths, has found that improvements to air quality following the introduction of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) are strongly associated with accelerated lung growth in children. Professor Griffiths is Professor of Primary Care at the University of Oxford and at Queen Mary University of London. 🔎Read more: https://www.jesus.ox.ac.uk/introduction-of-londons-ultra-low-emission-zone-linked-to-improved-lung-growth-in-children/
