Pembroke is a lively and vibrant academic community, situated in the heart of Oxford. Today, the student body is made up of 365 undergraduates, 27 visiting students on their Junior Year Abroad from US universities, and 255 post-graduate students. Students at Pembroke are active in College life, with wide participation in activities and events and an unusually active MCR (graduate student) communit

y. Another special feature of Pembroke is the JCR (undergraduate) owned collection of modern British artworks, founded shortly after the Second World War and now housed in a purpose-built gallery. Pembroke Fellows are supported in their teaching by a team of College lecturers and the College is also home to 15 Research Fellows and 11 Associates. At Pembroke, we believe that all those with the necessary academic talent should have the opportunity to experience an Oxford education regardless of their background. For that reason, the College has pioneered a new approach to access and outreach work, which have been hailed as a gold standard for such initiatives by the sector’s independent regulator the Office for Fair Access. Our 2026 Collingwood prize winners: Efimia Panagiotaki and Seda Öztürk!✨

Every year, the MCR come together in the summer for the Collingwood Banquet, a great opportunity for our postgraduate students to celebrate together the academic year just gone.

As is tradition, the Collingwood Prize is presented at the banquet to an MCR student who has shown incredible academic achievement. This year, the prize was jointly awarded to Efimia Panagiotaki (2021, DPhil Engineering Science) and Seda Öztürk (2021, DPhil Asian and Middle Eastern Studies).

"Pembroke's support has gone far beyond conferences and fieldwork," shared Efimia, whose research explores robot perception. "More than anything, the College gave me a home. It is where I met friends I will keep for life, and its community carried me through the hardest stretches of my DPhil."

Seda, who has been researching Azerbaijani grammar, shared: "Research is rarely straightforward—there are always ups and downs, and it can be easy to lose sight of the value of what we do. Awards such as this serve as an encouraging reminder that our work matters and is valued."

Old Quad has had a bit of a makeover recently! 🖌️

You may have noticed our new chalking recognising W1's rowing Headship last year.

With our usual artist out of action with a broken wrist, Keith from our Maintenance Team stepped up to the challenge, adding the 2025 date, updating 'Ladies 1st Eight' to 'Women's 1st Eight', and painting a set of oars crossed above a rose over the arch.

This was Keith's first attempt at chalking, and we think it’s fair to say it was a great success. Our chalkings have come a long way since the 1980s!

☎️ It’s almost Telethon time!! ☎️

There is less than a month to go until we begin calling for the 2026 Pembroke Telethon! A lovely group of students are preparing and getting ready by the phone to call our alumni and fellow Pembrokians.📱

They are really looking forward to hearing from you, learning more about your career and your memories of Pembroke and updating you on all the wonderful things happening at College. 🌸

Joseph Owen Dinner 06.08.2026 ✨

Every year, as part of Access Week, our OxNet students celebrate their week at Pembroke with a formal dinner in Hall. 🕯️

OxNet is part of our Access and Outreach initiatives. We work closely with partners across the UK to offer subject-specific programmes to Year 12 pupils from a range of backgrounds, encouraging them to apply to the UK’s top universities.

After a whole year of seminars, essays, study skills days and more, our OxNet students stay here at Pembroke for a week to gain valuable insight into what academic and social life at university might be like!

It’s safe to say we think they had a lovely time!!

Our doctors-in-training have been reflecting on the question: ‘What makes a good doctor?’ 🩺

Many congratulations to undergrads Daria Bageac and Leon Kielmann on winning the Pembroke Ayers-Evans prize for their essay responses!

For Leon, the ‘one universal quality of a good doctor’ is ‘someone a patient can trust.’ Daria agrees that despite the changing expectations for doctors throughout history, ‘society has always entrusted doctors with specialised knowledge and expected them to use it wisely in service of others.’

Clearly a good doctor is also a cat person?? 🐈

👏 Many congratulations to alumna Lily Elsner who showcased the newly-launched product of her startup, Jack Fertility, at the House of Lords!

Lily and her co-founder Nick Shipley presented ‘Jackit’, an easy-to-use postal s***m test kit that allows men to collect a sample at home and post it directly to an Oxford laboratory.

“Male factors contibute to around half of infertility cases,” shared Lily, “yet men are often only tested late in the fertility journey, while the physical and emotinal burden of investigation falls disproportionately on women.” Lily wants to change that by making checking s***m health simple, convenient and something men can do proactively, to prevent IVF and improve reproductive health for all.
