From St Catz student to discovering a new species! 🪸

Almost 50 years after first encountering a tiny red seaweed off the coast of Cornwall, St Catherine’s alumna Professor Christine Maggs has finally solved the mystery of its identity.

Christine studied Botany at St Catz, graduating in 1978, and went on to become a distinguished marine botanist. Her decades-long search has led to the formal identification of Ceramium ruenessianum — a previously undescribed species of seaweed. 🌿

From the vibrant atmosphere of the largest undergraduate College to the strong sense of community, Elizabeth reflects on the friendships and relationships with College Staff she’s made along the way.

We’re delighted to celebrate Professor Eleanor Stride OBE FREng HonFIET, Statutory Professor of Biomaterials at the University of Oxford and Fellow of St Catherine’s College, who recently joined BBC Radio 4’s Best Medicine for Series 3.
 
Professor Stride and her team are pioneering a new approach to drug delivery: microscopic bubbles carry powerful drugs through the bloodstream, before focused ultrasound is used to release them precisely where they are needed. 🎯
 
By targeting treatment directly to diseased tissue, this innovative technology could allow lower doses, greater effectiveness and fewer harmful side effects, with the potential to transform both patient care and the experience of treatment.
 
Professor Stride’s work was also featured in the pilot episode of Best Medicine in 2023, and she returned to the show to discuss why this could be the future of medicine.

A particular highlight was hearing from our current Graduate Scholars and the outgoing and incoming Presidents of the JCR and MCR, who joined Jude Kelly CBE, Master, on stage to reflect on life at Catz - past, present and future. 💙
 
Our sincere thanks to Dr Gordon Gancz, Emeritus Fellow in Clinical Medicine, for his generosity and support in making this memorable evening possible.
 
And, of course, thank you to all the generations of alumni and guests who came together to make this year’s celebration so special. 🥂

Some of our graduating students celebrated their achievements at the degree conferral ceremony in the Sheldonian Theatre, followed by celebrations here at the College earlier on in the month.
 
Led by Professor Ashok Handa, presiding as Dean of Degrees, it was a truly glorious day in every sense! ❤️
