How can jazz help us think about meaning, community, and peace? 🎶

This Wednesday, we're delighted to welcome Revd Dr Tim Boniface to Oxford as part of our Jazz Spiritualities series.

Tim is an acclaimed jazz musician, theologian, and Chaplain of Girton College, University of Cambridge, whose work explores the rich intersections of music, faith, and human flourishing.

His lecture, 'The Meaning of the Blues: Questions of hermeneutics, community and meaning through a jazz suite for peace', will draw on his experience as both performer and theologian to consider what jazz can teach us about interpretation, community, and the search for meaning.

The timing is particularly apt, as the Church Times has just published a feature on Tim's distinctive vocation at the intersection of music and faith, which you can read here: https://www.churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2026/5-june/features/features/music-be-the-food-of-faith

📅 Wednesday 10 June, 5pm
📍 Collier Room, Regent's Park College, Oxford
🎟️ Free to attend (booking recommended)

Tim Boniface will continue the series with a talk entitled ‘The Meaning of the Blues: Questions of hermeneutics, community and meaning through a jazz suite for peace’.

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Revd Dr Ruth Moriarty as Fellow in Theology and Ministerial Formation at Regent's.

A Regent's alumna, Ruth completed her PGDip in Theology in 2004 and is already a valued member of our community through her service on the College's Governing Body and as a research associate of the Centre for Baptist Studies.

Bringing extensive experience in pastoral ministry, theological education, and research in practical theology, Ruth's work explores discernment, congregational life, and the cultivation of 'slow wisdom' within church communities.

We look forward to the contribution she will make in forming future generations of ministers and church leaders.

What inspired J. R. R. Tolkien to write The Hobbit? 🧙‍♂️📚

In the latest REG TALK, Dr Mark Atherton explores the origins of one of the most beloved stories ever written, uncovering the influences, ideas and experiences that shaped Tolkien's classic tale.

Mark is a Senior Lecturer in English Language at Regent's, and a member of the Oxford Tolkien Network - and he's also a Regent's alum (1977, Modern Languages)!

Originally delivered to our alumni community, we're now delighted to share this brilliant talk on our YouTube channel. Come and get a little lost in Hobbiton with us 🐉

Huge congratulations to Dr Katrin Wilhelm, Regent's Tutorial Fellow in Geography, who was recently awarded a Certificate of Recognition for her brilliant work on the Lab-In-Your-Pocket project and her contributions to supporting young people's mental health 👏

Dr Wilhelm has helped pioneer new ways of using mobile technologies to engage young people with heritage, public space and the environment - enabling participants to explore, investigate and co-create knowledge through digital tools.
