Links: to prevent the spread of misinformation, spam, malware, or potentially inappropriate content, comments featuring a link to another site will be removed, regardless of the URL included. Problem comments: any type of repeated comment, explicit comment, unrelated comment, or misleading comment will be deleted and users may be banned. If an accusation has been made and a name used this will be hidden, and could result in legal repercussions if the person or entity named decides it is libellous. Hate speech: racism, sexism (this includes leaving disrespectful or explicit comments to other users), religious discrimination, homophobia and trolling are all completely unacceptable to the University of Oxford. We’re continuing our series of reflections from Oxford’s newest alumni, each sharing what they will carry with them from their time here.

For Patrick Merrigan (Oriel College, 2023), some of the most memorable moments at Oxford happened outside the formal spaces of study.

Asked what he will miss most about his time here, Patrick reflected on the conversations that seemed to happen everywhere:

'Some of the most insightful and entertaining conversations I’ve ever had came from people I’d caught in courtyards, stopped outside a library, or sat down with on a kerb outside of a pub that had just shut.'

For Patrick, Oxford was not only about lectures, libraries and tutorials, but the way ideas and friendships carried on beyond them.

'I’ll miss the fluidity of feeling the classroom everywhere I go.'

Vice-Chancellor Professor Irene Tracey recently joined Rhodes Scholar alumni and friends in Sydney for the Asia-Pacific edition of their Welcome Home Weekend.

On the theme of 'Journeys,' she invited Rhodes Scholars to reflect on the paths that brought them to Oxford, the transitions they are navigating now, and the futures they hope to shape together.

Established in 2017, the Welcome Home Weekend is a residential programme designed to support Rhodes Scholars as they transition into the alumni community. It enables them to celebrate shared experiences, cement lifelong friendships, and discuss purposeful leadership beyond Oxford.

Life after Oxford can feel exciting, uncertain and full of big decisions.

For Carys Hoggan (St Hilda’s, 2021), who graduated in 2024 with a BA in Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics, the transition meant leaving behind the familiar rhythm of Oxford life, from tutorials and college community to late-night walks past the Sheldonian and trips to G&Ds with friends.

Now pursuing a PhD in psychology at the University of Liverpool, Carys reflects on the skills Oxford gave her, including critical thinking, confidence and the ability to question ideas at their core.

Alongside her research, Carys has continued her long-standing work in equality, diversity and inclusion, advising government on education policy and speaking to MPs about improving provision for students with special educational needs and disabilities.

Her advice to final-year students and new alumni?

'Don’t panic.'

'It is fine for you to not know exactly what's going on now,' she says. 'You’re doing perfectly fine as it is.'

And for anyone hoping to make a positive social impact, Carys says the hardest part is often starting.

'Find something you're passionate about… You don't need to feel any pressure to do anything big and flashy.'

Last year our museums, libraries and gardens welcomed more than 3.8 million visitors.
