Let my voice be your voice to be heard.
Hi everyone my name is Nicola Cook, I live locally and study at the paisley campus. I’m standing for the position of Vice President of Welfare and Wellbeing.
I have studied at UWS for a number of years and I am currently in my 4th year of the Professional Health Studies honours degree.
Something about me is that it I am dedicated to things I’m involved in. In 2014 I spent the summer rehearsing and performing in both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Common Wealth Games.
I have been a student rep for the past two years and have loved being able to help students. Bringing issues to the attention of staff and then relaying the information back to students.
Through my time as a UWS student I have loved the incredible inclusion of students. I also know first hand what it feels like when your world falls from beneath you, I have seen first hand the support and empathy that staff and students alike gave me when I was struggling. With out the continued support I am not sure I would be in my honours year.
One of my priorities would be to continue and expand the current mental health support at UWS. I’m aware of the current support offered for mental health and wellbeing by UWS for all students and fully support all that is currently being done but feel that having a monthly group meeting in which students have the ability to talk with their peers about issues they are facing without feeling like they are being judged could make all the difference in tackling the stigma surrounding mental health.
Another of my priorities would be to work along side students who are facing financial hardship. I understand that students can face hardship at any point during their studies and want to ensure that students are able to get home safe. Whether you’re studying late or out with friends and you find yourself stuck with no way home, by implementing a safe taxi scheme as seen in Glasgow, this allows students without enough money to get home safely.
My final priority would be to promote awareness of health and well-being within the different school society’s. I believe that all students have the right to support and I aim to be the voice to help make that change. My aim would be to support the different school societies in their bid to support students who have health and well-being issues.
