NCL Computing Ambassadors at UWS: Talking AI

On Tuesday 9 December 2025 two of our students had the fantastic opportunity to attend the UWS Honorary Doctorate Masterclass Series with Professor Mark Girolami at the University of the West of Scotland’s Paisley campus.

The ‘Talking AI’ Masterclass was hosted by Professor James Miller, UWS Principal & Vice-Chancellor. Together with Professor Girolami, renowned Computational Statistician and Chief Scientist at The Alan Turing Institute, they led an inspiring, thought-provoking discussion on the transformative power of artificial intelligence and data science.

Our students were thrilled to gain firsthand insights exploring how AI is reshaping industries, research, and the future of work.

Staff and students from Computing and Digital Technologies are leaving this morning for sunny Italy to take part in a Turing Internship.

After applications, interviews and a rigorous selection process 10 students are joining two staff members for two weeks in Tuscany.

Happy Pi Day! 🥳

✨ Pi is a mathematical constant indicating the ratio of the length of a circle to its diameter, whose approximate meaning is 3.14. That's why math lovers celebrate Pi Day on March 14.

✨The most recent computing methods have so far been able to write a trillion Pi digits under the cord - and it's definitely not the end.

✨The idea of this holiday came to American physicist Larry Shaw in 1987. 👨🏻 🔬

✨ There is a worldwide tradition of eating a round cake decorated with Greek letter π on Pi Day. Pi is associated with the English word pie (pie) and its geometric shape. 🥧

We were joined by four fantastic and inspiring women at this event; Claire McRae, Jennifer Taylor, Evelyn Walker and Anita Howard.

This fantastic event aimed to inspire, educate and empower our students who are curious about the world of technology.
