Mike Daniels has been working with colleagues from NTS, Deeside, CEH, RSPB. Invercauld estate, Balmoral estate and funding from CNPA to explore the relationship between dogs and dotterel disturbance in the Cairngorms. The group have published their finding in Scottish Birds. They looked at how far dogs roamed off lead; what percentage of walkers on the high tops had dogs and how dotterel nest distribution was related to the distribution of human paths. They acknowledge and encourage the positive behaviour of dog owners on the plateau, especially as the overall trend in breeding dotterel numbers in Scotland is in decline.

How do urban forestry programmes remain effective over decades of political, economic and environmental change?

A new paper by Professor Anna Lawrence from the Centre for Mountain Studies, UHI Perth uses the Mersey Forest's 30-year history as a rare longitudinal case study to examine adaptation, governance and learning in urban forestry.

The research identifies five phases of development and shows that long-term success depends not only on tree planting, but also on strong partnerships, hybrid delivery models, and a sustained culture of evidence and learning.
