This multidisciplinary course combines the focus on the individual found in psychology and psychoanalysis with the wider cultural and systemic concerns of sociology. It develops a rounded understanding of human behaviour with practical application to a range of substantive policy areas. The modules are designed to provide you with a firm grounding in the fundamentals of sociology, and social, heal

th and developmental psychology. With this foundation in place, the course allows you to broaden and deepen your knowledge and understanding of the individual, the social world, and the relationship between them. This course addresses important questions about the human condition. It will provide you with the intellectual tools to appreciate the complexities of how we shape, and are shaped by, our social surroundings, as well as providing valuable vocational knowledge and skills. The wide range of modules and breadth of subjects means that the degree opens up the opportunity to many different careers in a wide range of sectors including the social sciences, criminal justice sector, health and related professions, social work, teaching and human resource management, government and in the public and third sector. This course is taught in our modern and well-equipped classrooms.

Next week is our favourite week of the year.

Monday and Wednesday we meet our new first years at induction. The ones who've been refreshing their emails all August. The ones quietly wondering whether they've made a mistake, or whether someone somewhere has made a filing error and they're about to be found out. (They haven't. They belong here.)

Then on Thursday we're at Peterborough Cathedral watching the class of 2023–2026 graduate. Three years ago they sat in that same induction room feeling exactly the same way. This week they walk out as graduates heading into social work, mental health services, teaching, research and postgraduate study, and plenty of them did it alongside jobs, kids, and a commute.

And then on Monday the 14th everyone else comes back, the corridors get loud again, and we go round once more.

New starters: bring your questions, all of them. 📚 Returners: we've missed you. Class of 2026: enjoy every second of Thursday. You've earned it. 🎓

Theories and Concepts in Psychological Therapies

📚 BA (Hons) Psychosocial Studies

From CBT to psychoanalysis, from family therapy to mindfulness, what actually works, for whom, and why? This module introduces the major approaches to psychological therapy, explores the evidence base behind each, and asks the hard questions about access, equity, and efficacy.
You'll consider how different interventions address depression, anxiety, addiction, and more , and develop a well-rounded, critical understanding of therapy as both a science and a human relationship. Essential for anyone considering a career in mental health or therapy.
