Today, on Merchant Navy Day, we recognise the vital contribution made by Merchant Navy personnel - past and present - and remember those who have lost their lives in service at sea.

The Merchant Navy continues to play an essential role in keeping global trade moving, connecting communities and supporting the economy, often in demanding and challenging conditions.

In Peterhead, we are proud to help prepare the next generation for this important profession. Pictured are some of our newest Merchant Navy cadets, who are developing the knowledge, skills and experience needed to begin successful careers at sea.

Today, we celebrate their ambitions while paying tribute to all those who have served, and continue to serve, in the Merchant Navy.

⚓ Knot skills on display! ⚓

Delighted to be showcasing the fantastic Knot Boards created by S3 pupils from Peterhead Academy during their recent time with us last academic year.

The finished boards are now on public display at our Peterhead Centre, showing off the impressive practical maritime skills the pupils developed during their sessions.

We’re looking forward to welcoming the next group of S3 pupils this week and introducing another group of young people to maritime skills, training and the opportunities available within the industry. Well done to everyone whose work is now proudly on display!

⚓ A fantastic day of industry engagement for Trainee's ⚓

We recently visited Fraserburgh Harbour, where a group of our Trainee Deckhands had the opportunity to step onboard two very different vessels and gain valuable insight into careers at sea.

A huge thank you to Richard and the team at Moray East for arranging a tour of the Service Operation Vessel "Esvagt Alba", giving students a firsthand look at the vital role offshore support vessels play in the operation and maintenance of offshore wind farms.

We also visited the fishing vessel "Chris Andra" FR228, providing an excellent opportunity to compare vessel operations and learn more about life and work within the fishing industry.

Experiences like these help bring classroom learning to life and showcase the wide range of career opportunities available across the maritime sector. A sincere thank you to everyone involved in making the visit possible! North East Scotland College

⚓ Another great year of supporting the RNLI ⚓

Pictured are Graeme, our Curriculum Manager and experienced RNLI crew member, alongside Olivia from Symposium café, proudly holding this year’s RNLI fundraising certificate following collections from the donation box at our Centre. 👏

Thanks to the generosity of staff, students and visitors, including the continued collaboration between the College and Café team, a total of £258 has been raised to support the RNLI’s lifesaving work around our coastline. 🚤

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed… now let’s see if we can beat the total in 2027! ⚓
