⭐ EDC SPORT ALUMNI ⭐

We’re back with another EDC Sport Alumni feature, and today we’re celebrating the fantastic progress of former Sports Coaching student Jamie Hutton! 👏

Jamie studied Sports Coaching at East Durham College and has gone on to build an exciting career in the football industry. ⚽️

Jamie is now working with the Foundation of Light, teaching PE and coaching, as well as working with Sunderland AFC Academy across the Pre-Academy, U9s and U10s.

It’s fantastic to see Jamie putting the skills and experience gained during his time at EDC into practice and continuing to develop as a coach. 👏

💬 Jamie’s biggest piece of advice to current students:

“When you get a chance to deliver a practical session, do it. Learn and reflect and think about what you can do better for next time.”

A brilliant message for anyone looking to pursue a career in coaching — get involved, learn from every opportunity and always look for ways to improve.

🏆 DAY 11 – MEET THE TEAM 🏆

We’ve reached Day 11, and that means it’s time to complete our Starting XI! ⚽️

Today we introduce Jacob Hanson, our Outdoor & Adventurous Activities Lecturer. 🌲🛶

Jacob brings a wealth of experience from the outdoor adventure industry, with 8+ years working professionally and over 20 years of personal adventure experience across the UK and abroad.

His favourite activities to coach are paddle sports, including canoeing and kayaking, helping students develop practical skills, confidence and a real appreciation for the outdoors. 🛶🌊

And his favourite sports personality? Nims Purja — an inspirational adventurer and mountaineer who embodies determination, resilience and pushing boundaries. 💪⛰️

Jacob completes our Starting XI, but our fantastic Sport team doesn’t stop there! 👀

Across our team, we have experience spanning professional sport, coaching, fitness, physiotherapy, outdoor adventure, boxing and more, giving our students the opportunity to learn from staff with real-world experience.

Today we’re introducing Leanne Tinkler, our Sport Centre Manager at East Durham College! 💪💙

Leanne’s background is in physical activity, with a real passion for the positive impact that exercise and weight training can have on both our physical and mental wellbeing. 🏋️‍♀️🧠

Her favourite thing to coach? Indoor cycling! 🚴‍♀️🎶 Creating an energetic atmosphere through music, motivating others and making sure every session finishes on a high! 🔥

And when it comes to her favourite sports person… there’s only one answer! 👀⚽ Jack Grealish!

Today we’re introducing Ian Raine, one of our Football Coaches at East Durham College! ⚽💙

Ian brings a wealth of experience from the game, having worked as an FA Staff Coach and Professional Academy Coach, with experience across both the men’s and women’s game. 👏

His favourite thing to coach? Respect for the game, its values and the players involved at every level. 🤝⚽

A fantastic message for developing the next generation of players — helping our students understand that success in sport is about much more than what happens on the pitch.

And when it comes to his favourite sports person… there’s certainly a horse racing legend in the mix! 🏇🏆

Today we’re introducing Amar Purewal, one of our Football Coaches at East Durham College! ⚽💙

Amar has a fantastic connection with EDC, having previously been an EDC student himself, as well as a former Newcastle United academy player.

A prolific non-league striker, Amar has scored an incredible 250+ career goals and currently plays for Bishop Auckland. ⚽🔥

His favourite area to coach? Attacking play – focusing on movement, combination play and finishing in the final third to help players become more effective in front of goal.

And when it comes to his favourite sports person… a true Premier League and Arsenal legend! 🔴⚪

🎓 FROM EDC TO UNIVERSITY – MEET OUR ALUMNI! 🎓

We’re proud to celebrate the success of Ellie Patterson, a former East Durham College Sport & Exercise Science learner who achieved an incredible D*D*D*! 🌟👏

Ellie has been reflecting on her time at EDC, including the experiences, trips and support from our dedicated Sport team that helped her throughout her studies.

Now, Ellie is taking the next step in her journey, progressing to the University of Sunderland to study Sport Therapy & Rehabilitation. 🎓🩺

From studying sport science at college to progressing into higher education, Ellie’s journey is a fantastic example of where hard work, commitment and the right support can take you.

🔥 MEET THE TEAM – DAY 7! 🥊

Today we’re introducing David Binns, our Boxing Coach at East Durham College! 🥊💪

David has an incredible background in boxing, having been involved in the sport since 1974 and competing in 140 amateur bouts before moving into coaching.

Now a Level 4 qualified coach, David has previously worked as an England Boxing Coach and Regional Coach for Tyne, Tees & Wear, bringing decades of experience and knowledge to our students. 🏆

His favourite thing to coach? Defensive skills – helping boxers learn how to evade, block and counter effectively. 🥊

And his favourite sports person? A true British sporting legend! 🇬🇧🏅

Today we’re introducing Kelly Billingham, our Progression Coach at East Durham College! 🎓💪

Kelly brings a wealth of experience from a military career and a diverse sporting background, having experience across a wide range of sports. As a versatile all-rounder, Kelly is currently focused on running. 🏃‍♀️

Her favourite thing to coach and develop? Resilience and independence – helping our students build the confidence, mindset and skills they need to progress both in sport and beyond. 💪🧠

And when it comes to her favourite sports person, there’s certainly no shortage of strength and determination! 🏋️‍♂️
