We are delighted to announce that the winners of the Morgan Innovation & Technology Prize 2019 are Rob Paterson and Tom Quinn of ORB Innovations.
The MIAT Prize was launched to celebrate Morgan’s 30th anniversary in 2017 and was specifically designed to help identify and support the next generation of innovators.
Last weeks awards ceremony, held on Wednesday 27th February at the Santander headquarters in London, was the culmination of a five-month process for our Finalists which firstly saw them shortlisted from 53 original entries and then secure one of six places in the final of the competition.
Each finalist was invited to attend a panel session with our judges at the City office of sponsors Moore Blatch before showcasing their innovations to the public at the Santander UK headquarters in central London, where the winner was announced by Jon Bentley, of Gadget Show fame and who presided over the judging panel, presented the awards to each of the finalists.

Congratulations to ORB the winner of the MIAT Prize 2019! ORB is a custom fit, Smart Mouthguard designed to address two problems in the sporting world. The first is concussion within contact sports like rugby, where it accounts for 25% of all injuries. Whilst it is a momentous problem and there have been law and protocol changes in recent years, there is still no accurate way to identify a head injury at point of occurrence on the pitch.The second problem is sports analytics, which is currently limited to the professionals due to the complexity and high price tags of existing products simultaneously aiding in concussion research. Dr. Heba Lakany from the University of Strathclyde is a finalist because of TAHARAC. Her team’s robotic arm exoskeleton aims to improve the rehabilitation experience for people with upper limb disabilities. The high cost of such prosthetics mean that many patients never reach their full potential for rehabilitation. The arm is powered by a rechargeable battery, making TAHARAC lightweight, well-balanced, and easy to use. This innovation will provide accessible and affordable devices to assist those with upper limb disabilities to better rehabilitate. Robert Paterson is a finalist and devised a custom-fit, Smart Mouthguard, ORB. It is designed to prevent the misdiagnosis of sporting head injuries. The secondary aims are also to improve the understanding of risks for contact sport players and support player performance improvements. Contact sports players often experience two problems: that of serious health risks from frequent concussions, and lack of access to proper sport analysis tools.
