Today is the start of National Student Money week 2026💰

As a student, we know that managing your finances can seem like a big and daunting task, however there are a few simple ways you can manage your money that will make a big difference:

💰Work out a budget and spend wisely:
Plan ahead and budget how much you can afford to spend each week, including bills such as your weekly food shop. To reduce these costs, choose wisely where you shop and maybe even cook together with your housemates or friends to share out the costs.

💰Have the right bank account:
Having a student bank account can really help, as they often come with added perks that can help you save money.

💰Part time jobs:
There are many companies that offer student part time jobs which are a great way to make some extra money alongside your studies. Our careers services at the university can assist you with updating your CV and finding part time vacancies that are available.

💰Take advantage of student discounts:
Many shops now offer a student discount if you show a valid Student ID at the checkout. This can be a great way to save a little extra cash when shopping.

💰Check you are accessing the correct Student Finance:
If you are eligible for Student Finance, there are a few ways to ensure you are accessing all available funds. If you are an undergraduate home student, you should be able to access both a Tuition Fee loan and a Maintenance Loan. As part of your maintenance loan, ensure you are MEANS tested and any household income is taking into consideration as you may be able to access more. If you are unsure if you have been MEANS tested, contact student finance direct or visit us in the Student Services Hub where we can also check this for you.

📢Spring Equinox Culture Festival – Thursday 19th March – call out for activity ideas

The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business are excited to begin planning their Spring Equinox Culture Event, taking place on Thursday 19th March 2026, and are inviting students to help shape it once again!

This annual celebration brings together heritage, creativity, wellbeing, and community, reflecting the rich diversity of our Faculty - including around 950 overseas students from 35 nationalities. Each year the event grows in scale and energy, and this time it will also be combined with contributions expected from colleagues working with the High Commission of India, who are planning a cultural collaboration in the spring.

They hope to feature a vibrant mix of cultural performances, music, exhibitions, workshops, film, storytelling, and food representing the cultures of our international student community, including Nigeria, the US, Hong Kong, India, the Maldives, Portugal and many more.

If you have an idea for an activity, performance, workshop, exhibition or creative contribution that you’d like to lead or co-create, they would love to hear from you.

To register interest, you can email [email protected] to request a proposal form. All proposal forms need to be completed and sent to the team by 28th January 2026 📝
