Congratulations to Jess on joining White Light!

Jess studied with us on the Live Events Production programme at City College Plymouth during the pandemic, a challenging time for everyone. From day one she was determined to excel, tackling every obstacle with enthusiasm and hard work. It’s no surprise to us that she’s now thriving in her career. We’re incredibly proud of you Jess, and you continue to inspire us all.

“Really pleased to say I’ll be joining White Light on a full-time, permanent basis! Anyone who knows me personally will know the last few years have been hard-fought to get to this point, but I can’t wait to get started!!”

Jess has been working with Rock City (now 24/7), honing her skills, and tonight she’s celebrating three years of dedication and progress. In her new role at White Light - supplier to over 50 West End shows, the BBC and royal events - she’ll be repairing, maintaining, installing and servicing lighting equipment. A brilliant next step for someone with such passion and drive!

“The only thing holding you back in this industry is yourself—as long as you have the love and passion for it, you can and will succeed.”

Ready to follow in Jess’s footsteps? If you’re keen to work in a fun and exciting industry, apply now to our Live Events Production programme at City College Plymouth.

Glen’s Rise from Student to Head of Lighting on Matilda

It’s fantastic to see Glen Weir, a former Live Events Production student at City College Plymouth, now working as Head of Lighting on the international tour of Matilda the Musical.

From there, he progressed through the industry, taking on roles as Chief LX and Deputy Head of Lighting on major touring productions, including The Book of Mormon.

Now leading the lighting department on one of the world’s most beloved musicals, Glen’s journey is a brilliant example of where training, talent and ambition can take you.

T Level students from the Production Arts course have raised the bar with a spectacular Esports event that brought together high energy, technical precision and true collaboration.

Driven by a shared vision—to empower young creatives through real-world experience—our students worked alongside peers from the Esports course and the college’s IT department to produce a high-quality, industry-standard showcase. The result? A slick, professional event that wouldn’t look out of place in a commercial setting.

This was more than just a one-off project. It was a student-led experience that mirrored professional production environments from start to finish. From pre-production planning to live technical operation, our learners owned every element. They demonstrated creativity, commitment and collaboration at the highest level—managing roles in live sound, lighting, vision mixing and more.

This event didn’t just meet expectations—it exceeded them. And most importantly, it proved what’s possible when we give students the space and trust to lead.
