🌊🐚 Rockpooling at Mount Batten Beach 🐚🌊

During the half term holidays PRSS clients and their families attended a fantastic Rockpooling session hosted by the lovely Freya from Ocean Conservation Trust πŸ¦€

Everybody had a great time learning how to safely identify and handle sea creatures and enjoyed a good bit of competition! 🐠

We then met the fantastic Jess Hirons who gave us a tour of the Mount Batten tower where everyone enjoyed stunning views of Plymouth Sound and learnt some fascinating facts about Plymouth history. πŸ°πŸŒ…

We then enjoyed a picnic before returning back to the Barbican on the Mount Batten Ferry. 🚀🧺

A big thank you to Stuart Jones at The Outdoor Partnership Plymouth for joining us and the generous grant he donated to ODILS to facilitate this trip and other future activities encouraging our clients to connect with blue and green spaces. πŸ’™πŸŒΏ

πŸ”¨ Triple T Studios Renovation Update 🎨

It was a busy session last week in the Press Release Hall at Triple T Studios, where our volunteers were hard at work continuing the renovation.

Tim Francis from Triple T Studios shared his praise, saying:
β€œThe volunteers from Odils Learning Foundation have been brilliant. They’re reliable, professional, quick to learn and always willing to try new skills.”

Tim also kept spirits and energy levels high by showing off his cooking skills and making sure everyone was well fed πŸ½οΈπŸ‘.

He added:
β€œOnce everyone relaxed with each other, their personal journeys and how they came to Plymouth began to emerge, often with great insight.”

Some great relationships are being built, and a huge well done to the team for their hard work in helping to create a welcoming community space in Stonehouse that everyone can enjoy πŸ’›πŸ—οΈ

πŸ‘ Well done to all involved!

πŸ“˜βœ¨ Recipe Book Session with Fotonow ✨

Last week the ladies from the ESOL classes at Mount Wise Neighbourhood Centre had another successful session with Jess from Fotonow (CIC), as part of a project with Zebra Collective and Fotonow designing a recipe book.

A big thanks to the lovely Elsa, Helen and Bety for preparing a delicious aubergine dish from Eritrea. πŸ†πŸ³πŸ₯˜

The women enjoyed not only working together to prepare the dish, but also experimenting with taking their own photos for our recipe book project. πŸ€πŸ“·

A big congratulations to Sazgar for running the creche for the first time, and for everyone’s contributions to another excellent session. πŸ‘

πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈπŸŒΏ Burrator Reservoir with Bikespace πŸŒΏπŸš΄β€β™€οΈ

Last week, some of our clients taking part in the Bike Space workshops had a lovely day visiting Burrator reservoir on the edge of Dartmoor. None of the group had been to Burrator before but were looking forward to getting outside of Plymouth.

The group started their ride along the old railway track with great views across the reservoir. Then they dropped down onto the road to look at the waterfall. After cycling halfway around the reservoir they found a nice picnic spot by a stream to have a rest and some food. After lunch they completed the rest of the loop, and spent some extra time looking at the main dam from below. 🧺

Then they took a long scenic route home across the depths of Dartmoor, passing through Princetown and pausing to take in the spectacular views from Pork Hill, down towards Tavistock. The group loved the scenery and wanted lots of photos! πŸ“Έ

A big thank you to AJ CIC for leading this week’s session. Everyone had a fantastic time with lots of positive feedback! πŸ™ŒπŸ˜Š

✨ Women’s Self Employment workshops ✨

Last week some of the ODILS female PRSS clients and students attended a workshop about self employment and how to start a business. πŸ’Ό

Jo Dench-Owens, Business Advisor from SHE (Support Her Enterprise) delivered an informative and inspiring talk about female entrepreneurship, and encouraged the women to focus on making a success of their ideas.

She also shared some of her vast experience in running her own businesses and gave some helpful and useful advice.

Everyone felt very motivated after the sessions to take the next step in making their dreams become a reality.

Thank you to Jo for her valuable time in facilitating such an amazing workshop, and for delivering clear and achievable goals for the aspiring entrepreneurs πŸ™ŒπŸ’–

✨ Staff Inset Day ✨

Last week, the ODILS team came together for our staff inset day. It was fantastic to have everyone in one place, hearing updates from our trustees and various departments, and taking part in valuable training sessions.

We ended the day with a shared lunch alongside our staff and wonderful volunteers πŸ₯—πŸ°

During lunch, everyone also took part in a World Cup 2026 sweepstake, with each person choosing a country to support during the tournament in June ⚽️🌍 The person with the winning country will receive a prize!

A truly lovely and enjoyable way to finish the half term β€” thank you to everyone who brought in food and helped make it such a great day πŸ’™

✨ Welcome to the ODILS Teaching Team, Patricia! πŸ‘‹βœ¨

We’re delighted to introduce Patricia, one of the newest members of our teaching team here at ODILS πŸ‘

πŸ’¬ In Patricia’s own words:

"Hi, Patricia here! After recently graduating from my CELTA course, I am delighted to have joined the ODILS family as a teacher.

My beginner students are at such an exciting stage, and I love creating a joyful, safe space where they feel bold enough to try their best and grow. My goal is to make every student leave class feeling increasingly confident in their English - there is lots of laughter, interactive games and high-fives in my classroom!

I am also passionate about food and particularly how it connects us; I run a food rescue charity and will shortly be opening a community cafΓ©, which is an ideal environment for English students to practice vocabulary, improve conversational fluency, build local connections while giving back to the community!"

We’re so pleased to have you with us, Patricia πŸ’™πŸ“–

πŸŽžοΈπŸ“·πŸͺ΄ Stories in Nature Photography Exhibition πŸ„πŸͺ΄πŸ“·πŸŽžοΈ

Recently, some of the ODILS staff went to see the amazing work produced by the first Stories in Nature participants at the Fotonow studios on Cornwall Street.

The evening was hosted by Marina, Project Lead and Employment Mentor, alongside our project partners Greenwood Music and Fotonow, and featured photography and woodland crafts created by the students.

It was wonderful to see how much everyone’s hard work had paid off and the brilliant results. A huge congratulations to everyone involved β€” we all had a lovely time.

Odils Learning Foundation Fotonow (CIC) and Music CIC would like to thank National Lottery players and The National Lottery Community Fund for enabling this work to happen.
