🔥 SCIENCE + FOOTBALL = WORLD CUP FEVER AT UTC PLYMOUTH! ⚽🧪

Our Science Department is getting students World‑Cup‑ready with a Sweepstake! Loads of students have already picked their teams and we’ll be tracking the competition to see who comes out on top 🏆🌍

But of course… we’ve linked it all back to the science of football 👀🔬
From the forces behind the perfect free kick, to the biology of elite athletes, to the sound waves roaring through the stadium, football is FULL of real‑world science!

Here are some awesome science‑football facts:

⚽ A power shot can reach over 70mph, thanks to Newton’s Second Law (force = mass × acceleration!)

🧠 Professional players make up to 200 decisions per match, showing off incredible reaction times and neural processing

💨 The curve on a free kick happens because of the Magnus Effect — spinning the ball changes air pressure around it

💓 Footballers’ hearts can reach 190+ bpm, showing just how much aerobic and anaerobic fitness the game demands

🌱 Modern football pitches use sustainable hybrid grass, mixing natural fibres with tech‑engineered materials to reduce environmental impact

We can’t wait to see which team takes the win and which student scientist predicted it! 🏆🔭

Stay tuned for updates as the World Cup unfolds… 👀

🚀🔧 Year 9 Lego + CAD!

Our students have been diving into an exciting mix of CAD design and Lego engineering.
To build up their skills ahead of their Cambridge Nationals, Year 9 started by modelling individual Lego bricks from technical drawings 💡📐 They’re learning how to use fasteners in CAD to connect multiple components.

Students build their ideas in Duplo first, then recreate them digitally in Onshape, the same software used by real engineers. 🔩💻

Some of our students even took on the additional challenge: designing mini Lego figures. A brilliant stretch task that pushes precision, creativity and advanced CAD skills.

Amazing work from our future engineers! 🌟🔬✨

🚀 Science at UTC Plymouth!

7S have been diving into their Investigating Speed practical this week, exploring how different objects travel down a ramp and timing each run with real precision. Collecting accurate measurements and calculating speed using their own data.

It’s great to see our classrooms buzzing with curiosity and teamwork and to watch our future scientists, engineers and innovators developing the practical STEM skills that will shape their futures. This is exactly what UTC Plymouth is all about!🔬📏⚡️

🏙️🔥 Skyscraper Challenge … Godzilla! 🔥🏙️

We had way too much fun making this new video, some of you will remember the Skyscraper Challenge from earlier this year. The big question is…
Did YOUR skyscraper survive the mighty Godzilla? 👀🦖

Our students loved it so much that they’ve officially requested a King Kong sequel, so guess what? It’s happening. This May, we’re back in the workshop with brand‑new 3D‑printed skyscrapers, ready for round two. Keep an eye out for another video soon. 👀🦍✨

In case you missed it, here’s what our Year 7s have been up to:
🚀 Designing and 3D‑printing their own skyscrapers
💻✏️ Creating CAD models from scratch
🖨️ Watching their builds come to life
🧠 Developing engineering thinking, problem‑solving and digital design skills, all core to what we do here at UTC Plymouth
