🔥 SCIENCE + FOOTBALL = WORLD CUP FEVER AT UTC PLYMOUTH! ⚽🧪
Our Science Department is getting students World‑Cup‑ready with a Sweepstake! Loads of students have already picked their teams and we’ll be tracking the competition to see who comes out on top 🏆🌍
But of course… we’ve linked it all back to the science of football 👀🔬
From the forces behind the perfect free kick, to the biology of elite athletes, to the sound waves roaring through the stadium, football is FULL of real‑world science!
Here are some awesome science‑football facts:
⚽ A power shot can reach over 70mph, thanks to Newton’s Second Law (force = mass × acceleration!)
🧠 Professional players make up to 200 decisions per match, showing off incredible reaction times and neural processing
💨 The curve on a free kick happens because of the Magnus Effect — spinning the ball changes air pressure around it
💓 Footballers’ hearts can reach 190+ bpm, showing just how much aerobic and anaerobic fitness the game demands
🌱 Modern football pitches use sustainable hybrid grass, mixing natural fibres with tech‑engineered materials to reduce environmental impact
We can’t wait to see which team takes the win and which student scientist predicted it! 🏆🔭
Stay tuned for updates as the World Cup unfolds… 👀
