The fourth edition of our scholarship in partnership with Portsmouth Football Club is now live. The scholarship awards a student £9,000 and receive them in £3,000 intervals during their undergraduate degree and have the opportunity to gain work experience with the football club.

The scholarship supports students under the age of 25, living in the Portsmouth area or on the Isle of Wight, and are the first member of their family to go to university or have a household income lower than £35,000.

Professor Graham Galbraith, the University of Portsmouth Vice-Chancellor said: “ Our partnership with Portsmouth Football Club has always been about showing local young people that higher education is for them. There are plenty of talented young people in this city. We are pleased to invite you to a networking event to mark the opening of the exhibition Drawing Breath(less).

The networking event is an interdisciplinary gathering inviting practitioners from across the arts and science communities. It will include brief introductory speeches by the organisers, followed by an opportunity to view the exhibition and meet other practitioners.

About the exhibition:

Drawing from notions of breath and breathlessness as a form of urban exploration, survival, and even protest, this exhibition brings together experimentations with a range of artistic methods. Through photographic practice and material explorations, this project seeks to illuminate the impacts of climate change and the changing environment on the body, as it is considered through a socio-political lens.

Drawing Breath(less) is a practice-led research project by Dana Ariel. This work was created as part of the interdisciplinary and international project on the Impacts of climate change and the environment on physical activity and sleep, a joint project by the University of Engineering and Technology (Viet Nam), Viet Nam National University (VNU) and University of Portsmouth (UK).

The exhibition is hosted by True Ambassadors in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth and the Vietnamese Intellectual Society in the UK and Ireland.

This event is supported by the British Council through the UK/Viet Nam Season 2023 programme:

Date and Time: 20th June 2024, at 4pm-6pm, followed by an opening event from 6pm-8pm.
Address: 9th Floor, Import Building, 2 Clove Crescent, E14 2BE London.

Please RSVP to confirm your attendance at the networking event using this form: https://go.port.ac.uk/mFzFPB

Student Engagement at the University of Portsmouth!

Today, our SEKE Community of Practice session looked into ways to improve student experiences and new opportunities for students. SEKE (Student Engagement in Knowledge Exchange) enables external businesses and organisations to connect with universities and students to collaborate on projects, share knowledge, skills, and ideas.

Dr Zoe Dann, Associate Dean of Students, and Claire Pitkin, Award Coordinator for The Portsmouth Award discussed the benefits of SEKE and the Portsmouth Award, an online programme designed for students to reflect on skills made from extracurricular activities.

A great example of SEKE is our Business Consultancy Project, which offers final-year business students the opportunity to work with local businesses as they create business proposals to create solutions for business growth.

The University’s SEKE Footprint has seen 3,643 students, 300 external organisations, and 300 academics collaborate on projects and continues to grow!

Why are US investors investing in European football?

The month-long UEFA EURO 2024 is set to kick off on Friday, as 24 teams aim to win the title in Germany.

Here at Portsmouth, Dr Christina Philippou, Principal Lecturer in Accounting, Economics and Finance, recently published an article on the Conversation UK on US investments in European Football.

The large influx of US investors in European Football appears to be driven by financial motivations, with nine of the English Premier League’s 20 clubs now under their ownership. Investments have been made through direct purchases of shares, either by buying the entire club or a part of it. Clubs include Chelsea Football Club, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, and Wrexham AFC.

European football is not very profitable for business, clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool FC, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur had financial losses in the 2022-2023 season with clubs relying on their owners for cash.

We’re so proud of all our graduates, and believe our teaching and research has a real impact in helping them reach their potential, with outstanding outcomes and employability.

Obviously, success isn’t all about the money.

However, we’re delighted that data from the Department of Education shows our graduates annual salary was 2% higher than the average salary for the 2015-16 cohort graduating from universities in the South East.
