Nirvana, a historic military site, and student societies?
A short history of The University of Portsmouth Students' Union ➡️
🌟 1908 – A Students' Union was first formed at Portsmouth Municipal College.
🌟 1960s – Portsmouth College of Technology’s Students’ Union was situated in K Block on Park Road.
🌟 1969 – Portsmouth College of Technology became Portsmouth Polytechnic and the institution purchased former military site St Pauls where it opened the Students' Union.

🌟 1983 – The Students’ Union moved to Alexandra House in Ravelin Park.

🌟 1989 – Nirvana played at Alexandra House’s venue, The Garage, on their first UK tour.

🌟 2002 - The new Student Centre opened on 21 September 2002 on the site of the former Department of Surveying.

🌟 2026 – The Students’ Union is temporarily moving to Neptune House on Lord Montgomery Way while the Student Hub is constructed.

As part of the University’s 10 year Estate Masterplan, we’re creating a new vibrant, social and supportive space for students on the site of the current Students' Union on Cambridge Road which will also link to the University of Portsmouth Library.
