Good luck to Team Portsmouth in Varsity 2026 🙌

This weekend, Portsmouth will host the 18th Varsity against the University of Southampton. But, before the rivalry between the South Coast teams took hold from 2009, we played against the University of Chichester back in 2008.

This edition of Purple Wednesdays, the university's free student newspaper, also featured the University of Portsmouth Skydiving Club and UPSAC, the University's diving club.

Nirvana, a historic military site, and student societies?

A short history of The University of Portsmouth Students' Union ➡️

🌟 1908 – A Students' Union was first formed at Portsmouth Municipal College.

🌟 1960s – Portsmouth College of Technology’s Students’ Union was situated in K Block on Park Road.

🌟 1969 – Portsmouth College of Technology became Portsmouth Polytechnic and the institution purchased former military site St Pauls where it opened the Students' Union.

🌟 1983 – The Students’ Union moved to Alexandra House in Ravelin Park.

🌟 2026 – The Students’ Union is temporarily moving to Neptune House on Lord Montgomery Way while the Student Hub is constructed.

As part of the University’s 10 year Estate Masterplan, we’re creating a new vibrant, social and supportive space for students on the site of the current Students' Union on Cambridge Road which will also link to the University of Portsmouth Library.

Congratulations, Matthew and Luke! 👏

Two University of Portsmouth graduates have been nominated for BAFTA Television Awards, and we couldn’t be prouder 💜

⭐ Matthew Lewis, cinematographer – Adolescence
🎓 BA (Hons) Film Production, 2017

🎥 Matthew’s amazing one-take camera operation for the highly acclaimed Netflix crime drama series helped make the series one of the most visually stunning shows of last year.

⭐ Luke Flight, editor – Unforgotten: The Bradford City Fire
🎓 BA (Hons) Television and Film Production, 2012

🎞️ Luke Flight’s incredible work as an editor on this BBC documentary tells the stories of the 56 lives lost in the 1985 tragedy, and those who won’t let it be forgotten, with thoughtfulness and impact.

Last week, the University’s Chancellor, alumna and former UK President for WPP, the world's largest marketing services group, Karen Blackett CBE, hosted an event for students all about building resilience 💪

Karen began her impressive career after graduating from the University of Portsmouth in 1992 and has over 30 years experience in the marketing communications industry.

Karen’s special guests included industry experts and People of the Global Majority:

⭐ Adrian Green, business leader and international leadership coach, and founder & CEO of PressurePoint

⭐ Belinda Brown, Finance Executive and experienced business leader

⭐ Jamie Gill, British Fashion Council Executive Board member and founder of The Outsiders Perspective

⭐ Rhamon Agbaje, KPMG Entrepreneur of the Year award winner and co-founder of Loud Parade

Students heard about the importance of a growth mindset when faced with setbacks along with speakers’ personal stories of overcoming challenges, from training with Mo Farah to facing sexism and racism in the workplace.
