๐ŸŽ‰ Congratulations to the winning plumbing students who won the DEWALT challenge yesterday morning! ๐Ÿ”ง๐Ÿšฐ ๐Ÿ‘

Each member of the team won a DeWalt Bluetooth speaker ๐Ÿ”Š and batteries ๐Ÿ”‹

Students were asked to work in small groups ๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™€๏ธ to build a working sink cabinet ๐Ÿšฟ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ in just two hours โฑ๏ธ

They got to use DEWALT drills ๐Ÿช›, tape measures ๐Ÿ“, jigsaws ๐Ÿชš and safety gear ๐Ÿฆบ to complete the challenge, which tested their plumbing skills ๐Ÿ”ง, timing โฐ and teamwork ๐Ÿค

A big thank you ๐Ÿ™Œ to all the DEWALT team who judged the competition ๐Ÿ† and were on hand to show students how to use the tools safely and effectively when needed ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿงช๐Ÿ”ฌ Our Laboratory Science T Level students from Reading College and Bracknell and Wokingham College recently visited Bayer to undertake a practical session in the Training Lab as part of their Science Project provided by Bayer ๐Ÿ‘

Students took part in a practical experiment, Gene Editing Model Investigation ๐Ÿงฌ, designed to develop hands-on laboratory skills and deepen their understanding of how gene editing works through educational model experiments.

During the session, students:
๐Ÿ“ Identified the aim of the investigation and wrote hypotheses
โš—๏ธ Planned experiments, including independent, dependent and controlled variables
๐Ÿงซ Carried out practical work safely following laboratory protocols
๐Ÿ“Š Recorded observations and results using tables, diagrams and photographs.

This exciting project has enabled students to gain up to 105 hours towards the required 315 hours needed to achieve their T Level programme across two academic years ๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿ™Œ

A huge thank you to Bayer for supporting our students with this valuable industry experience ๐Ÿ’™

On Friday, to wrap up ๐Ÿ’š, we invited students and staff to colour in ๐Ÿ–๏ธ a big mandala and nature-inspired giant colouring sheet ๐ŸŽจ๐ŸŒธ to encourage them to switch off between studying ๐Ÿ“š or working ๐Ÿ’ป.

Colouring in helps us to slow down ๐Ÿง˜, promote mindfulness, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve motor skills โœจ

Although not completely coloured in, the sheet is beginning to look bright and colourful ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ˜Š

We're going to keep the sheet out for a bit longer to encourage more students and staff to join in

๐Ÿชกโœจ On Wednesday, as part of , we held a Sashiko sewing: slow stitch meditation workshop for students to take part in. ๐Ÿ’™

Sashiko (meaning little stabs) is a traditional Japanese embroidery and mending technique ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต using a repeating, even running stitch to create beautiful geometric patterns. Originating over 400 years ago as a way to reinforce clothes and trap warmth ๐Ÿงต, it's now widely celebrated for visible mending and creative textile art.

The student who took part in the workshop learnt how to do Sashiko and created a coaster under the expert eye of Mara, one of our Learning for Leisure teachersโœจ

This allowed her an opportunity to slow down ๐Ÿง˜ and learn something new, both of which benefit mental health, as well as taking a creative break from her studies ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ“š

If you would like to learn Sashiko, we run a five week course at Woodley Hill House, on Monday mornings, with the next one starting in June ๐Ÿ“…
