A Reading archaeologist who helped to discover a 1200-year-old monastery has been nominated for a top award. And your vote could help him come out on top.

Dr Gabor Thomas, Associate Professor of Archaeology at the University of Reading, is nominated for the Current Archaeology award for his sustained record of leading major research excavations that have transformed our understanding of early medieval monastic landscapes. Most recently he led the field school in Cookham that unearthed an Anglo-Saxon monastery led by the powerful Queen Cynethryth, who ruled the kingdom of Mercia with her husband King Offa in the late 8th century.

Thomas said: “Uncovering an early medieval monastic landscape preserved to this exceptional level was truly mind-blowing... Being recognised for my work fills me with pride.”

Let’s celebrate his achievements. Vote for Gabor now at http://ow.ly/Jso350LShe8

Dominic Lees continues his research on deepfakes and their impact on screen cultures, with an emphasis on the creative opportunities of AI in the screen and heritage sectors.

This article for The Conversation builds from the workshop hosted by FTT during the summer, which brought major film businesses and stakeholders to Reading to discuss the future.

Despite their dangers, highly realistic deepfake images and videos are finding positive uses in the creative arts.
