Organised by three fabulous alumni • So, what's Squids In about? 🦑🦑🦑

Squids In was born during the end of the Covid-19 lockdown in May 2021. Double Okay and both have ties to Reading, and want to see more q***r events happening in our town.

We want q***r people and allies to rally together in a supportive space and celebrate q***r art and performance. From absurd to mainstream, experimental to completely unoriginal: we love it all! We are getting together and showing appreciation for what q***r artists have to say right now.

ID: Image 1: A poster with a dark purple background with lighter orbs of purple creating a supernatural underwater feel. Amongst the orbs are three giant squids dancing together in various shades of purple to pink. On top of this image is green text that has the 2nd paragraph of the above caption. It also reads 'Squids In, A Q***r Performance Night'.

Image 2: A poster with the same background as image 1. Green text across says ‘Squids In’, across the centre of the poster. Along the bottom of the poster are logos - Double Okay, A Girl Called Stephen, Reading Rep and Arts Council England. Text reads: 4th November, 7.30 doors, Reading Rep Theatre.

RSA PhD Symposium

Imagining Tomorrow Today: Examining the promise of art, technology, and science collaboration

Theme

“‘The future’, Berardi writes, ‘is not a natural dimension of the mind. It is a modality of projection and imagination, a feature of expectation and attention, and its modalities and features change with the changing of cultures.’”

This year’s symposium is concentrated on the transdisciplinary approach to art, technology, and science, where we will be examining the benefits and the contribution of the collaboration between the disciplines to society and environment.

We will focus on the following questions:

How does the relationship between contemporary art and the sciences help us to imagine the future? To locate new practices onto what Frederic Jameson would describe as ‘cognitive mapping’, that is, “the means to make our world intelligible to ourselves through a situational understanding of our position”?

Can art collaborate with new technologies to affect long-term changes, take an active role in shaping the future, and how does that manifest?

Can we, as artists, debate Nick Srnicek’s claims that, “for the new aesthetics to be of lasting significance, it needs to push in a different direction beyond just the weird”?

The event is in person at the University of Reading, Whiteknights Campus on 15th July 2022, 10.00 - 17.00 and on-line via Zoom.
