Chuhan Peng started out as a data analyst. But she kept finding herself more interested in building the infrastructure than using it.

That curiosity led her to analytics engineering, and having studied MSc Digital Business and Data Analytics at Henley now builds the data infrastructure that entire teams rely on to make decisions.

"I'm not just consuming data but building the infrastructure that makes everyone else's work possible - that feels meaningful to me."

On AI, she doesn't shy away from the uncomfortable question: what does your role look like in a few years? Her view - the people who thrive will be the ones who lean into that question, not avoid it.

Her advice to students? Don't specialise too early. The more you understand across technical and business domains, the more adaptable you become.

What the data says about AI at work (and why it matters for your career)

If you're about to step into a workplace, or already progressing within one, where AI is part of daily life - this is worth a moment of your time.

A year ago we surveyed UK workers on how they really felt about AI. We've just revisited the data - and the picture is more complicated than the headlines suggest.

Optimism has edged up slightly (58% versus 56% last year), but underneath that sits something worth paying attention to:

61% of workers still feel overwhelmed by the pace of change - and that number hasn't shifted in 12 months. Caution is the dominant sentiment, rising from 26% to 28%. And nearly two-thirds say they sometimes choose not to use AI tools, even when they're available - not because they can't, but because something is stopping them.

The worry running through all of it comes down to dependency, losing skills, and not being able to spot when AI gets things wrong.

As Professor Keiichi Nakata puts it: "While interest and optimism surrounding AI remains high, there is still a clear disconnect between AI action and ambition."

The technical access to AI is largely sorted. The harder question - the one organisations are genuinely struggling with - is whether people are being given enough clarity and support to actually use it well. That gap is where the challenge sits, and where the opportunity is too.

Leaders face more demands than ever before, often pulling them in different directions at the same time. They must drive performance while protecting wellbeing, innovate while managing risk, and balance individual needs with collective success.

Join Benjamin Laker, Professor of Leadership at Henley and Nathalie Peach, Executive Coach and Founder of Peach Coaching as they explore:

šŸ‘‰ What it takes to lead effectively in an increasingly complex world
šŸ‘‰ Why tension is part of leadership, not a problem to solve
šŸ‘‰ How to balance kindness with accountability and tough decision-making
šŸ‘‰ Ways to deliver short-term results without losing sight of long-term value

Hosted by Dr Narendra Laljani, Executive Fellow at Henley, this conversation will explore the paradoxes of leadership and the challenges leaders face every day. Bring your thoughts and reflections along and be part of the discussion.

It's National Volunteers Week.

When a Henley alum mentors a student, that student gets real-world perspective no classroom can replicate. When you speak at an event, someone in the room makes a decision about their career they might not have made otherwise. When you offer a placement, you are giving someone their first proper foothold.

Last year Neil Poole hosted our London alumni drinks pop-up lecture in his own time.

Your time at Henley shaped you. Think about who helped make that happen - now you can do the same for someone else.

A scholarship doesn't just fund a degree - it can change everything

"You could be holding yourself back from a life-changing opportunity."

That's the advice from Masters student Avantika Singh when asked what she'd say to someone hesitating to apply for a scholarship.

We spoke to three students whose scholarships didn't just open a door - they changed their entire journeys. What struck us most wasn't the financial relief. It was the confidence it gave them. As one student put it: "Whenever I walk into a room, I feel like I belong."

If money is the thing stopping you from applying, that's exactly the kind of barrier a scholarship exists to remove.

Not everything at Henley happens in a classroom.

The quad at Greenlands has long been a favourite spot for programme members and staff. Known as the Tutu Quad, it takes its name from Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who planted the olive tree 20 years ago this month when he visited Henley to receive his Honorary Fellowship and mark the launch of the Desmond Tutu Scholarships for Ethical Leadership.

Recently it's had a new kind of energy. A mother duck and her 11 chicks who've been exploring campus with exactly the curiosity you would hope to see in any new cohort. Keen, alert, and not remotely intimidated by their surroundings.

The Henley team made sure they had what they needed - water, the right food, and a clear path to the river. This week, they swapped the quad for the riverbank.

It’s important to take time out from your studies. A break away from your books for some well deserved down time. An ice cream on hot days, strolling round Whiteknights chatting with friends, or a visit to the campus petting zoo… All will do the trick.

Leading – and learning – on her own terms

ā€œIt is only when we know who we truly are within a diverse group of colleagues who value each other’s differences that we can truly make our fullest contribution to the world.ā€ - Caroline Bixby

For years, Caroline believed she simply wasn’t academic. It shaped how she viewed herself at work, despite building a successful career and rising to Chief People Officer level.

What makes Caroline’s story so compelling is that her Executive MBA at Henley was never about proving herself to anyone else. Following an ADHD diagnosis in her early 50s, it became an opportunity to better understand how she learns, leads and works best.

Her experience also highlights an important shift in how leadership is understood. The ability to collaborate, embrace different perspectives and create environments where people feel valued for who they are is just as important as technical expertise.

It’s a thoughtful reflection on learning, leadership and the value of understanding what different people need to thrive.

Journalist and broadcaster Emily Maitlis has spent her career asking the questions others do not think to ask - or do not have the nerve to.

In her conversation with Professor Bernd Vogel on The Henley Centre for Leadership's ā€˜Leadership Unlocked’ podcast series last year, she turned that same lens on leadership itself - and it makes for a genuinely fascinating listen.

Two things she said that are worth reflecting on. That experience and age enhance performance rather than diminish it - which cuts against a lot of what gets celebrated in leadership circles right now. And that unless you have something genuinely new to say, you are wasting everyone's time.

Applications for Just IMAGINE if... close on 31 May and there is still time to enter.

If you are a Henley student or alum with an idea that tackles a real global challenge, three winners each take home £5,000 plus a year of business development support from Henley academics and the Enterprise Lab (HELAB).

This award is not looking for a finished product. It is looking for a bold idea and someone with the drive to develop it. Felix Weaver won with Ultra Rapid, a generative AI tool to make learning more accessible for neurodivergent students. He had an idea. He entered. He won.

Your idea must address one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and must not have received more than £100,000 in third-party funding.
