Every teacher can make a difference when it comes to climate and sustainability. I

At the University of Reading, our Climate Education & Sustainability Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Framework empowers trainee teachers to bring climate learning into the classroom, help children understand sustainability, and turn knowledge into action.

Piloted in 2022/23, this Framework is now freely available to other training providers-and it's been recognised with the Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE)!

What started as Sunday rehearsals in April and May turned into one of the most vibrant moments of the Centenary RAG Parade 🥁✨

A huge congratulations to our BA Education students who led the IoE Dragon Samba through Reading town centre this year!

The students worked incredibly hard to learn the samba drumming, support younger children during rehearsals, and help create such an energetic and joyful parade atmosphere on the day. From drumming and singing to headdresses, face paint and marching through town, this was a real team effort — and the Institute of Education ended up being the most represented school in the parade!

We’re so proud of the professionalism, enthusiasm and care the students showed throughout the project, especially in the way they worked with children and supported one another.

An amazing collaboration between students, ITTSOC, Universal Voices and staff to celebrate the University’s centenary in style ❤️

Inspiring young minds through maths!

We recently welcomed students from Reading Girls’ School and Reading School to campus for a maths enrichment event focused on collaboration, creativity and curiosity.

The day provided local pupils with the opportunity to experience university life and engage with mathematical challenges beyond the classroom, while our trainee teachers gained valuable practical experience designing activities to inspire future learners.

The event also strengthened our partnerships with local schools and highlighted the importance of engaging students with maths in creative and meaningful ways.

Thank you to everyone involved in making the event such a success.

Ceramic art installations are now on display at University of Reading, London Road campus as part of a special centenary project.

The 100 People Pots and Peace Doves project brought together more than 400 staff, students, alumni and members of the local community to create permanent ceramic artworks celebrating creativity, inclusion, sustainability and connection.

The installations include three large-scale ceramic pots made from 100 individually created clay tiles, alongside a collection of peace doves inscribed with the word “peace” in many different languages spoken across our community. 🕊️

The artworks can now be found across London Road campus and will also become part of the University’s Public Art Trail.

Learning by doing!

Our Year 2 BA Primary Education students planned and taught CASE lessons during their school placements - and then reflected on what worked, what challenged them, and what inspired them.

A standout experience was their visit to the Museum of English Rural Life (MERL), where they selected historical objects and designed classroom activities to bring history to life for primary pupils. Hands-on experiences like this help our students grow into thoughtful, creative teachers.
