What happens when geography leaves the classroom? 🌍

Our PGCE Primary (Science) teacher trainees from the Reading Partnership were out exploring geography through a hands-on fieldwork session with students from our lead partner schools.

Because when we’re preparing the teachers of tomorrow, learning about climate and sustainability can’t just stay on a slide.

At the University of Reading, we believe climate and sustainability education is everyone’s responsibility. Across our initial teacher training programmes, trainees explore climate change, climate justice and — importantly — how to turn knowledge into meaningful action in the classroom.

From the session to the fieldwork, it’s all about connecting what we learn with the world around us.

Learning it. Exploring it. Thinking about how to teach it. 🌱

Already working in a school and wondering what your route to QTS could look like?

Join our live Q&A on employment-based routes into teaching to find out more about the options available, including the Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship (PGTA) and Assessment Only (AO) route.

The session is for anyone considering becoming a primary, secondary or special-school teacher — whether you're a teaching assistant, already working in a school, or looking to change career.

We'll cover eligibility, applying, training and what it means to gain QTS while working in a school. There'll also be an opportunity to ask your questions.

You saw the parade. But you didn’t see all the Sundays that went into it… 🥁
Here are few of the faces behind the University of Reading’s Centenary RAG Parade!

Our BA in Primary Education students were busy learning samba, rehearsing, helping children prepare their part in the parade — and, of course, getting parade-ready with face paint and headdresses. 🎨

The Institute of Education's Dragon Samba was a real team effort, with students from ITTSOC and Universal Voices coming together to make it happen.

And they didn’t just turn up on the day.

They gave up their Sundays to rehearse. Learned the music by heart. Helped train the children. And brought a whole lot of energy (and noise 🥁) to the streets of Reading.

The result? A brilliant day, a LOT of happy faces — and by head count, the IOE was the most represented school in the parade.

You’ve achieved QTS. So… what’s next? 👀

If you’re already teaching and fancy taking your practice a little further, our PGCE (Reflective Practice) could be your next step.

Designed for primary and secondary teachers who hold QTS — or are working towards it — the course gives you space to step back from the day-to-day and ask:

What does the research say?
What could I do differently?
And what difference could that make in my classroom?

Through live online tutorials, individual support and pre-recorded learning, you’ll explore evidence-based approaches to teaching and complete an action research project focused on developing your own practice.

And there’s a little more to it: the credits you gain can contribute towards a Master’s in Education.

You’ve got QTS. Maybe it’s time to keep learning.

“But I’ve mostly taught in SEND…” 👀

If you’ve spent most of your teaching career in a special school, SEND or Alternative Provision setting, you might be wondering:

Can I really apply for the Assessment Only Route to QTS?

The answer is: you could.

Your experience in specialist settings can count — provided your role gives you opportunities to demonstrate the full range of Teachers’ Standards.

There is one important part of the journey: you’ll need a minimum of six weeks in a mainstream school setting, with at least three weeks completed before you apply.

So if QTS is something you’ve been thinking about, don’t count yourself out just because your experience looks a little different.

Your classroom may be different. Your route to QTS can be too.

Can storytelling help children engage more deeply with maths? 📖➕✨

That's the question explored by more than 70 teachers, teacher educators, curriculum specialists and policymakers in Thailand as they came together to learn about the Maths Through Stories approach, developed by our colleague Dr Natthapoj Vincent Trakulphadetkrai.

Hosted at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok and supported by contributions from UNESCO and OECD colleagues, the workshop explored how storytelling can help make mathematics more meaningful, engaging and inclusive for learners.

The event was also livestreamed, allowing hundreds more educators from across Thailand to join the conversation.

It's exciting to see research from our Institute of Education helping shape educational practice around the world. 🌍
