🌻 Staff and students at Ripon Evolve are kicking off Nature & Environment Week as part of our Achieve Before You Leave programme.

Students will be taking part in community litter picks on Tuesday 12th and Friday 15th May to raise funds for developing our yard space and creating Jane’s Garden, in memory of our much‑loved TA Jane Foyle.

We’ll also be heading out on our Annual Sponsored Summer Walk on Tuesday 9th and Friday 12th June, walking from Evolve to Fountains Abbey (with a shorter Studley Deer Park route available).

Throughout the year, students have worked with Horticulture to build planters and a bug hotel from reclaimed materials, grow bulbs, flowers and veg, learn plant care, explore composting with North Yorkshire Rotters, and grow over 100 sunflowers in memory of Jane. 🌻🌻🌻🌻

All funds raised will support our Nature & Environment Strand, Horticulture projects and the creation of Jane’s Garden including plants, compost, tools, a shed, a plaque and, we hope, an outdoor shelter.

Our catering and hospitality students recently took part in an off-site visit exploring local hospitality and catering outlets. During the activity, students had the opportunity to purchase edible treats and ice creams. 🍦

They developed key life skills including money handling, communication, and safe road crossing procedures, while gaining confidence in real-world settings.

Thank you to Norton's Deli Ripon for providing an example of great service to our students!

Nature and Environment students have recently enjoyed visits to the Heritage Garden at Ripon Museums as part of their Nature and Wellbeing topic. The sessions focused on how we can use the environment around us to support our mental health and wellbeing.

During the first visit, students were given a guided tour of the gardens and learned how they were used throughout the history of the workhouse. They explored the Heritage seed collection and discovered varieties that are still grown at the museum today. Students also learned how the gardens were managed to efficiently feed a large number of people year round, the types of fruit and crops grown, the different job roles within the garden and methods used to keep pests at bay. We also discussed how volunteers care for the gardens today and the positive impact volunteering can have on wellbeing.

In the second session, students had the opportunity to experience volunteering in the gardens themselves. Activities included washing information signs, clearing and weeding paths, sweeping, removing rocks from planting areas and litter picking around the site. Students also practiced the health and safety and environmental maintenance skills developed in previous Nature and Environment sessions.

Student feedback included enjoying “learning the history,” “working as a team alongside my classmates,” and “doing work outside.”
Thank you to the Workhouse Museum staff and volunteers for providing such a wonderful experience.

🎬From storyboard to screen! Our Digital Skills students planned, created, and edited their own short videos, blending original content with generated media, music, effects, narration, and title screens. Creativity came alive through stop-motion, creative writing, and dance. Enjoy a couple of examples below!

Science & Enterprise students got out into nature recently to explore our local Spa Gardens.

Engaging in an alphabet nature walk, students practised their independence, mindfulness, and botany identification skills. We were also lucky enough to have some beautiful sunshine to accompany our trips! 🌞

Guest speaker Emma Taylor from Digital Mentality visited our tutorial session to talk to students about digital wellbeing and mental health. Emma shared practical wellbeing tips and introduced a range of apps and games designed to support healthy habits and promote online safety.

Students explored how digital use can affect mental health, learned strategies for managing screen time, and discovered tools to help them build positive digital routines and stay safe online.

Student feedback highlights the impact of the session:
"I downloaded the app WYSA on Thursday and have been using it all weekend and found it immensely helpful! I've used it to set reminders to take my medication, and asked it about problems I am facing. " This student told staff it seems the app is very useful and gives good advice, such as talking to real people about problems.

Some students had a creative response to thinking about how they would draw emotions as a character!

Thank you so much to Emma for her time and such an impactful session!

🍃 Exploring Nature & Wellbeing
Our Nature and Environment students recently enjoyed a wellbeing walk to Hell Wath Nature Reserve. They practiced their species‑ID skills, spotted plenty of squirrels, and looked out for early signs of spring. A brilliant mix of learning and fresh air.

🌍 Humanities: Build‑Your‑Own Country Project
In Humanities, students have been developing their Create Your Own Country projects. Today’s focus was economics — including a role‑play activity running a “boat trips” business to practise real‑world maths skills. Students then began shaping the foundations of an economic plan for their imagined nations.

🌼Science & Enterprise students have started their Botany module, just in time for spring!

Students have been learning about the different components of a flower and their functions in plant reproduction. As the daffodils have just begun to bloom, we seized the opportunity to get hands on and dissect some real flowers. Tying in with our Horticulture core aim and Nature & Environment enrichment strand, Evolve students are becoming budding botanists!

🍕 Pizza‑making fun!

We had a brilliant time making our own pizzas in hospitality and catering sessions — the students’ creativity was fantastic.

A big shout‑out to Ripon Domino’s for kindly supplying the boxes so everyone could take their homemade pizzas away. It was a wonderful gesture that made the activity even better.
