Starting and finishing in Les Sables-d’Olonne, sailors from around the world will take on 30,000 miles of solo, non-stop sailing in one of the world’s greatest sailing challenges: the Golden Globe Race 🌊⛵

And if that wasn’t tough enough, they’ll do it without modern navigation technology or outside assistance 🤯

Every mile sailed, every sail raised and every Great Cape passed will help support Sheffield’s Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) and its pioneering research into new treatments for neurological conditions including MND, Parkinson’s and dementia.

2009 was no ordinary year for Sheffield alum Peter Jalowiczor. It was the year he discovered his first planet! 🌍✨

On an otherwise ordinary Christmas Eve, Peter sat down to do something he loved: analysing publicly available NASA data. A couple of hours later, he spotted something extraordinary: his first planet 🤯 It was orbiting a distant star hundreds of light years from Earth. And just a few months later, three more discoveries followed.

Peter’s passion for astronomy began long before Sheffield, but it was during his time here that it really took off. Studying under Professor David Hughes, he developed his lifelong interest into a passion that would eventually lead to discoveries recognised by NASA.
