Today is Merchant Navy Day, a chance to recognise the men and women of the Merchant Navy, past and present, who have played a vital role in keeping our nation supplied and connected. Merchant Navy Day is marked on 3 September each year, with the Red Ensign flown in tribute to merchant seafarers and their service.

As a borough with proud maritime roots, we remember those who served at sea during times of war and peace, and we thank today's merchant seafarers for the essential role they continue to play in our daily lives. The Merchant Navy flag is being flown at South Shields Town Hall today as a mark of respect and recognition.

βš“ We thank all merchant seafarers for their service and contribution.

3rd September each year is recognised as Merchant Navy Day πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

On 3 September 1939, the Donaldson Line passenger ship Athenia became the first maritime casualty of the Second World War when it was sunk, resulting in the loss of 112 passengers and crew. Over the following six years of the war, merchant ships and their crews faced daily threats and heavy losses. More than 30,000 British Merchant Navy seafarers lost their lives during this war.

The courage and dedication of Merchant Navy seafarers have been vital in maintaining global supply lines during times of conflict and crisis. Their importance remains today, with Merchant Navy crews currently responsible for transporting around 95% of the UK's trade.

The Merchant Navy’s service and sacrifices are recognised each year across the world on Merchant Navy Day. In South Shields, members of our staff joined The Mission to Seafarers' Merchant Navy Day Service and wreath-laying ceremony at the Merchant Navy Memorial on Mill Dam to honour and remember those we have lost.

Next steps after Results Day – why a Cadetship with us might be for you πŸ€”βœ…

This Level 3 and A Level Results Day, we want to congratulate our Pre Cadetship students who completed their Vocational Level 2 and Academic Level 3 courses with us this past academic year

πŸ™ŒTheir hard work and dedication during their courses was commemorated at our Pre Cadet Celebration of Achievement event last month, with student’s families and friends coming together with our staff to celebrate their course completion and achieve certificates and awards πŸ†

Many of our Pre-Cadet students will be returning in September to commence their Cadetship with us – a fully paid and sponsored training programme incorporating study and working at sea πŸ‘· training to become a ship’s officer in either our Navigation, Engineering, or Electro-Technical Officer routes

We are now a Safe Reporting Centre for Hate Crime, meaning our students and staff have a safe place to report any hate crime against themselves or others, alongside being able to access dedicated hate crime support from our Wellbeing Team and Hate Crime Champions.

This forms part of the measures we are putting in place to uphold a safe enviroment for everyone at our college πŸ’™

Last week, we officially became Safe Reporting Centres for Hate Crime along with our teams from South Tyneside College and South Shields Marine School.

We're proud to be the first colleges in the region to work in partnership with Northumbria Police to train more than 40 members of staff as Hate Crime Champions. This means our students and staff now have a safe, supportive environment where they can report hate crime, access guidance, and receive ongoing support from our dedicated Wellbeing Team.

A huge thank you to Jasmine and Jim from South Tyneside Community Engagement Team for delivering such engaging and informative training. Pictured is Jasmine with Emilia, our Enrichment Officer, whose commitment made this initiative possible as part of our ongoing work to support, safeguard and educate our staff and students.

Together, we're creating a safer, more inclusive college community where everyone feels heard, supported and respected.
