More Outreach success to celebrate, University of Southampton Chemistry research groups hosted 32 Year 12 A level students for this years Work Shadowing days on 25th & 27th July. Students expressed their gratitude to the hosts for an excellent insight into Chemistry research at the University.
We'd like to thank everyone in Chemistry who supported this outreach activity. Also thank you to the students with the support from their teachers for applying to attend the work shadowing events. The calibre of applications was very high and it was clear to see that the students have great enthusiasm and passion for Chemistry. We are sure many will go on to study Chemistry further at University and would be delighted to see them join us here at Southampton as Undergraduates.

UoS Chemistry were delighted to welcome 350 Year 12 A level students and their teachers to our Twilight Practical sessions over 11 days in June and July.

The practical involves the extraction of trimyristin from nutmeg, a rewarding experiment that gives students the opportunity to use a range of organic practical and analytical techniques, and experience life in an undergraduate chemistry lab. A large number of student demonstrators and Academic staff were on hand to assist the students and answer their questions about chemistry and university life.

The School of Chemistry enjoys hosting this outreach activity, to see their enthusiasm in the students for the subject and enjoyment of being in our state-of-the-art laboratories that were refurbished just a couple of years ago.

Here are some of the students who visited (images shared with permission from their school or college). We hope to see some of them at the Open Days in the Autumn on Sun 10th Sept, Sat & Sun 7-8th October and joining us as Undergraduates in the future.
Further details on the Open Days are on the website: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/open-days/undergraduate

Our BSc and MChem Chemistry with Medicinal Sciences degrees specialise in pharmacology and medicinal chemistry, where you learn how chemistry and the biological sciences combine to help us understand every aspect of the treatment of disease. This allows scientists to create new treatments and therapies.

Hear from our lecturers and students on what to expect on our Chemistry with Medicinal Sciences programme in our latest video.

Professor Jeremy Frey, Head of the Computational Systems Chemistry, University of Southampton, appears in this episode of Research Talk, a podcast, hosted by Helen Clare, Senior e-infrastructure strategy manager at Jisc.

They discuss digital research infrastructure, how the current systems and tools need to change to better support research and the opportunities that could be realised with these advancements.

During this episode of the Research Talk, Helen Clare was joined by professor of physical chemistry and head of computational systems chemistry at the University of Southampton, Jeremy Frey.

Three Chemistry PhD students from the Characterisation and Analytics research section have been awarded prizes for their research presentations at recent conferences.

In early March, Rebecca Baker was awarded second place prize at the Royal Society of Chemistry’s 2022 Twitter Conference. This year's event took place over a 24-hour period with around 900 posters from 69 countries, and 8,000 tweets. Her poster focussed on her research on the use of Supercritical Fluid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (SFC-MS) for the analysis of pesticides.

In April, Molly Wilson took first prize for her talk at the 5th International Mass Spectrometry Summer School in Belfast. 50 early career researchers presented posters and based on her abstract Molly was selected to present a 20-minute talk along with 7 others. Her presentation described the application of chromatography and mass spectrometry to unravel the complexity of diesel fuel.

Rebecca’s project is funded by EPRSC and Syngenta and Molly’s by EPSRC and Innospec and both are supervised by Professor John Langley and Julie Herniman at Southampton.

Rob Carroll’s poster entitled “Developing the Application of the Crystalline Sponge Method” described his work using crystalline MOFs to encapsulate molecules, to get single crystal structures for compounds that have never been suitable for crystallography before. This earned him a poster prize at the British Crystallographic Association Spring Meeting in Leeds.

Rob is supervised by Professor Simon Coles and works closely with Dr James Orton
