Our researchers have identified the best dosage for each ADHD medication. It could help patients avoid dosages that are too low to be effective or too high, causing side effects.

The team, led by Professsor Samuele Cortese, has also developed a free online tool based on the findings.

Congratulations to Dr Valeria Parlatini, Associate Professor in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, who has received an NIHR Advanced Fellowship worth nearly £1.4 million to support effective treatment of ADHD.

The funding will support research which aims to predict who is going to benefit from ADHD medication Methylphenidate (MPH) or not, based on pre-treatment clinical, cognitive and physiological characteristics.

Families waiting for months, or even years, for a child ADHD diagnosis feel stressed, powerless and “forever in limbo”, according to a study by our psychology researchers.

Working with King’s College London, they spoke to parents on waiting lists with the UK’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

Parents recognised the strain services are under, but also expressed their frustrations and suggested improvements.

A questionnaire tool to identify the support needs of neurodivergent children & young people ahead of formal assessment is being trialled locally.

The tool, developed from Southampton research, focuses on their strengths and interests rather than what they find challenging.

A group of experts, led by Professor Samuele Cortese, are warning that far from being over-diagnosed, people with ADHD are waiting too long for assessment, support and treatment.

In a paper, published today in the British Journal of Psychiatry, they argue that there is no robust evidence that ADHD is over-diagnosed in the UK.
