Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) delegates visited Southampton last week to see the Auditory Implant Service (AIS) and meet with the Vice-Chancellor and other senior staff. The visit highlighted the crucial role played by the Higher Education sector in supporting NHS surgical services and helped develop links between the University and local surgical providers.

The focal point of the visit was a tour of the AIS, a regional centre based within Southampton Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. AIS provides assessment and life-long care to those needing cochlear implantation and related types of surgical implant for the treatment of deafness.

The AIS Team works with six hospitals in the South of England to provide this life-transforming technology and care, and supports over 2,000 patients, providing implants to up to 120 new recipients annually.

✨Happy International Women in Engineering Day! Hear from our amazing Southampton Women ECS Engineers below! ✨

Student Grace Main was always fascinated by STEM growing up, and it was her namesake American Computer Scientist Grace Hopper who inspired her. Grace is a recipient of the Ada Lovelace Scholarship, which 'gave me the confidence to believe that I am truly meant to be here.'

Jennifer Wataranan is proud to be a woman studying Electronics and Computer Science, no easy feat. So, what's her advice to others? 'Never question or doubt your ability because even though it can be a tough area to study, you are more than capable!'

Teaching Fellow, Dr Sarah Hewitt, told us about her journey. 'For someone with a first degree in English and Art History, being able to say I have a Doctorate and teach computer science in my 50’s always fills me with pride.'

Research Fellow Jennifer Williams tells us what led her to Computer Science. 'I found my niche when I discovered that I could mix language/linguistics with computer science.'
