This Volunteers’ Week, we're celebrating the thousands of alumni who give their time to support the University of Southampton community.

Whether through mentoring, sharing career insights, speaking at events, supporting student recruitment, or helping fellow graduates build their networks, alumni volunteers play a vital role in helping others feel connected, confident, and inspired about their future.

As one current student reflected:

"The alumni panel really inspired me — the practical advice and real-life experiences felt relatable and helpful. The university’s alumni network is such a great support."

For many students and recent graduates, hearing directly from someone who once stood where they are now can be genuinely transformative.

That impact is felt by volunteers too. As alumnus Srinidhi Sathyamurthy (MSc Artificial Intelligence, 2024) shared:

"Not too long ago, I was in the same position myself, so being able to encourage other students, answer their questions, and share my experience felt really meaningful."

This year alone, more than 3,600 alumni volunteers contributed over 20,000 hours across the Southampton community.

Together, those conversations, mentoring sessions, events, and interactions are helping students and graduates build confidence, explore opportunities, grow their networks, and feel more connected to Southampton and one another. Together, we are strengthening a global community of students, graduates, alumni, and supporters, creating opportunities for learning, networking, mentoring, and personal growth.

To every alumnus who has volunteered their time this year: thank you. Your support is making a difference.

Scientists led by the University of Southampton have revealed that an imbalance of nutrients in seawater can cause coral disease – possibly to a greater extent than that from heat stress of warming oceans.

New research conducted at Southampton’s Coral Reef Laboratory, and with colleagues at the University of Derby, shows disruption of the delicate nutrient balance of the sea can destabilise microbial communities that live in harmony with corals, triggering disease.

Devastating outbreaks include the common and highly destructive Black Band Disease (BBD) which moves across the coral surface, killing coral tissue, and leaving behind just bare skeleton.

Although not the only cause of BBD, the team found 88 percent of recorded incidents of the disease occurred in regions with highly imbalanced seawater nutrient ratios.

Findings of the new study are due for publication in the journal Nature Communications.

At 59, Linda was enjoying life as a grandmother, spending time with friends, and working in a career she loved as a palliative care nurse.

Then things began to change.

What started as double vision slowly became memory loss, confusion, and getting lost in familiar places. Eventually, Linda was diagnosed with posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), a rare form of dementia linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

“There’s no treatment for me,” Linda says. “But I might be able to help people in the future.”

Now, Linda is taking part in the READ-OUT study at University Hospital Southampton and the University of Southampton, helping researchers explore whether blood tests could diagnose dementia earlier and more accurately.

Earlier diagnosis could give future patients more time, more support, and better access to treatment.

This Dementia Action Week, we’re recognising the people behind the research, and the importance of accelerating breakthroughs in dementia care.

Every 3 seconds, someone develops dementia.

A disease that steals memories, independence, and precious moments from millions of people and families around the world.

At the University of Southampton, researchers are working to change that. Our research into the brain’s self-cleaning system has uncovered new insights into how dementia develops and how it could one day be diagnosed much earlier - before symptoms appear.

Earlier detection has the power to transform lives, opening the door to earlier support, interventions, and future treatments.

But there is still so much more to do.

That’s why we’re fundraising to build the Institute for Medical Innovation (IMI) - a pioneering new building that will help accelerate research into dementia and other major diseases, bringing experts together to drive new breakthroughs.

This Dementia Action Week, help support the future of dementia research by donating to the IMI. Find out more: https://fund.southampton.ac.uk/innovation/dementia. 💙

Scientists have proven that a wildflower steeped in folklore for its medicinal powers has genuine healing qualities – and the potential to help combat antibiotic resistance.

A team of researchers from the University of Southampton, the NatPro Centre in Trinity College Dublin and Brunel University of London examined 70 bogland plants from across Ireland for their potential antimicrobial activity.

They discovered that Tormentil inhibits the growth of the multidrug-resistant bacterium Acinetobacter baumannii, one of the World Health Organisation’s top priority pathogens.

It means Tormentil has the potential to contribute to the development of new antimicrobials.

Today we’re celebrating the birthday of a true legend - Sir David Attenborough.

Broadcaster, natural historian, and one of the most influential figures in modern broadcasting and environmental history.

For generations, his storytelling has shaped how we see the natural world. Bringing the wonders of Earth into our homes, and reminding us what’s at stake if we fail to protect it.

We’re proud to say that Sir David is an extended member of our Southampton community. Having been awarded an honorary degree by the University in 1992 - and more recently, having worked alongside our researchers to bring groundbreaking discoveries to global audiences.

In his BBC documentary Attenborough and the Giant Sea Monster, Southampton scientists helped reveal a 150-million-year-old predator using cutting-edge imaging technology - taking our research from the lab to millions around the world.

From the depths of the ocean to the future of our planet, his work continues to inspire curiosity, urgency, and hope. What an absolute blessing Sir David Attenborough is to us all.

Happy Birthday, Sir David 🌍

What’s the Attenborough moment that sticks with you the most?

Alumni around the world came together to support the University’s first-ever International Employability Week, led by the Careers, Employability and Student Enterprise team.

We kicked off the week with our South West Branch in Chengdu and Greater Bay Area Branch in Shenzhen employability events. A huge thank you to Branch Chairs Claudy Liao, Kenny Huang, along with their committees for making it all happen.

We heard from entrepreneurs Raman Dhalwani and Abbie Hughes on breaking into marketing in the UAE and Daniel Bateman on his experience as an UK Entrepreneur in China.

The week continued with a fantastic alumni & student networking mixer on campus, featuring graduate speakers Dr Vinienne Kachollom Rwang, Marwa Ashfaq, Thasmia Basha and Captain Manmeet Singh Kapoor.

Yiran, Global Advertising student reflected ‘The international alumni panel really inspired me — they shared so many insights about UK careers, practical advice and real-life work experiences that felt relatable and helpful....the university’s alumni network is such a great support!’
